Hillsboro, May 30 - Earl Knox, Hillsboro, received a message Friday evening stating his nephew, Leo LANE of the US Naval Air Force, had been Killed IN ACTION in an airplane crash at Seattle, Wash, it was thought
the accident occurred on Thursday, May 25. He had just completed 50 missions in the Pacific and had been home on leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. JT Lane of Centerville, SD. Before entering the service 4 years
ago he was a telegraph operator for three years for the Chicago, Northwestern and Line, at Centerville, his father having been in the employ of the company for 31 years as ticket agent. On May 28 the youngest of the five Lane sons was to enter service of his country, having enlisted in the Navy. The other brothers wearing the uniform of Uncle Sam are Sgt. Alan Lane, who when last heard from was in Africa and Staff Sgt Claire Lane, who was located at Chanute Field, near Rantoul, Ill, since entering the service about four years ago but was recently transferred to New Mexico. Both Alan and Claire were formerly employed in the Hillsboro Hardware owned by the late MW Bowers. Another brother, Maurice Lane, in the Army is located in Iceland.
The body of Leo Lane will be returned to Aberdeen, SD on Wednesday May 31 for burial. Owing to traveling conditions, Mr. Knox was unable to attend the funeral. - kbz
