WWII-KIA-HUGHES, Dwight

Pfc. Dwight Hughes, aged 32, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Hughes of Covington who was reported Missing in Action as of Dec 18, 1944 died in a German prison camp March 13th in accordance with a telegram received last week by his wie, Mrs. Bessie Sorrels Hughes of Crawfordsville.

The War Department message gave no details in regards to the circumstances surrounding his captures imprisonment or death.

Pfc. Hughes was inducted into the army Jan 17, 1944 from Fountain County where he resided at the time of his registration. He operated a filling station in Covington several months, but later was employed in a bakery
at Crawfordsville.  At the time of his induction he was operating a grocery store in Crawfordsville. He was sent overseas in June 1944 serving in the 2nd Infantry Division of the 9th Army.  He was captured during the Nazi counter-offensive in the December fighting in the Belgium hub. Surviving, besides his parents and wife are two daughters, Carol, aged 8 and Kay aged 7; two brothers, Sgt. Donald Hughes with the Army Air Corps at San Marcos, Texas and Ralph Hughes of Minneapolis, Minn; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Kingery of  Crawfordsville and Miss Joy Hughes of Covington. - kbz
Official records state he was Killed as a Prisoner of War - how horrible - RIP Dwight !!
