NEWTOWN – Sgt 1C Samuel H. Howard, 41 of Newtown, an Army veteran of 22 years died Friday of a cerebral hemorrhage in the 249th General Hospital at Camp Drake, Japan. Sgt. Howard had contracted malaria was taken to a hospital in Vietnam then sent to the hospital in Japan. Born in Crawfordsville, he was graduated from Newtown HS in 1944. He entered the Army soon after graduation, attended Purdue for one year before returning to the Army. He served in Greenland, Korea, France, Columbia, Ecuador and Panama, and while in Panama, requested duty in Vietnam. He had been with an engineer battalion there since August of this year. He married Gloria Gray of Newtown in 1949. She survives along with son, Gregory and daughter, Cheryl all of whom have been living in Newtown with Mrs. Howard’s mother. The two children have been attending Lafayette Jefferson HS and the Howards were building a home in Lafayette. The family had accompanied Sgt Howard to France, Columbia, Ecuador and Panama. Sgt. Howard was a member of the Newtown Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. CW Howard of Newtown; four brothers, William S Howard of Newtown; C. Warren Howard, promotion director of the Lafayette Journal and Courier; John Howard of Haven, Kan and Robert Max Howard of Washington, DC; and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth Dooley of Lebanon. The body will be returned to Newtown.
