Son of Isaac Sloan and Jemima Ellen WINTERS.

Civil war service in I company, 40 Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Private. Mustered in 21 Dec 1861. Wounded at the battle of Missionary Ridge, 25 Nov 1863. Shot in the chest by a musket ball which went through his chest, right lung and exited below his right shoulder blade. After being released from the hospital he was captured at the battle of Franklin, TN, 30 Nov 1864 and released in Vicksburg, MS, 21 Apr 1865. He was imprisoned at Cahaba Prison in Alabama. He survived the sinking of the Hospital Steamer Sultana when its boiler exploded, 27 Apr 1865. He suffered a contusion as a result. Another record shows he had a severe wound to the hand at the battle of Chattamonga, TN.

18 Feb 1868--files for veteran's pension. Address is near Steam Corner, Fountain, IN. He was declared 3/4 disabled.

5 Jul 1907--filed for Civil War veteran's pension in Cave, Indian Territory(OK). Said he was 5'6'' tall, light complexion, blue eyes and had light hair. Occupation was farmer. He says he moved from Covington, IN, to Kansas for 3 years and then to the Cherokee nation for 12 years.
