HELMS, Horace Hatfield (Mutt)

Horace Hatfield Helms (Mutt)  was born in Veedersburg but lived a few years in Malvern AR where he met his wife. He was born March 24, 1887, signed up for service in Malvern on June 5, 1917. His registration card has barber as occupation. Later after he and his family moved back to Veedersburg, he was a rural mail carrier. I am not sure where he served. I have a letter that he wrote to his sister on YMCA paper, postmarked Oct 24, 1918, San Antonio TX. They had been in quarantine for two weeks and were checked by a doctor every day. He wrote "I guess you people are having a siege of the flu". He also said the night before about 9 p.m. a paper boy came by with an "extra" that said Germany accepted all of Wilson's demands and the room all went wild!  -- thanks to Laura Gephart Adams for sharing
