The Decade Was 1850's

1851 - John L. Soule, in an editorial in the Terre Haute Express, advises: "Go West, young man, go West." But New York Tribune editor Horace Greeley gets credit for the line.

1851 - Indiana adopted a state constitution that included a measure protecting the property rights of married women.

1859 - During this decade, a tidal wave of 2.5 million immigrants enter the United States, including 66,000 Chinese.

For The Week Ending June 7 1859

ROTARY HARROWS—J. W. McLean, of Lebanon, Ind.;

I claim the combination of the specified obliquely set teeth, with two or more harrow frames revolving in opposite directions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

[Two revolving wheels are connected to a common draft pole in such proximity to each other that the teeth, which are arranged on the circumference of the wheels in an inclined position, serve to clean each other as the teeth of one wheel pass by those of the other.]

The Lebanon Pioneer
March 28, 1895

T. P. Miller was recorder in 1856, when the records of that office were destroyed by fire.
