STEPHEN MARVIN was born in Jennings County, Ind., June 26, 1826, and is one of the twelve children of Delancey and Lydia (Albert) Marvin, both natives of New York State. Delancey Marvin came to the Southern part of this State in 1817, remained a short time and then moved to Kentucky, where he lived eighteen years and then returned to Jennings County, where he and wife are yet living, aged respectively eighty-eight and eighty-five years. Stephen Marvin learned shoe making from his father, and when but thirteen years old made two pairs of shoes in a day. He became an expert, and has made his own pegs and completed five pairs of shoes between sun and sun. In 1843, he married Maria J. Childs, who was born in Jennings county, Ind., in 1826, and is the daughter of John and Nancy (Baker) Childs, both natives of Kentucky. To this union have been born eleven children-Sarah J. (deceased), Henry D., Nancy A., John G., William T., Lottie, Emma E., Frances M., Charles, George F. and Oscar 0. In 1862, Mr. Marvin came to t is township and settled on part of the land entered by his father in 1833, and here has superintended his farm and worked at his trade ever since. Mr. Marvin, with his son, William T., is the inventor of a draft equalizer, and has now an application in for a patent for a boot with only one seam (cut to save crimping), and also for a shoe back without seam and cut to fit the ankle.
