A work in progress....
1. Unknown LEMMING was born about 1770-1780.
Notes: It is not known at this time who the parents of Nathaniel and Ephraim Lemming were. Presently, I am searching records in Dearborn County, Indiana for a connection with the Lemming / Leming family in that county. It is very likely that Nathaniel Lemming was in Dearborn County before coming to Warren County in 1828/29. He most likely married Jane McGahan in Dearborn County abt. 1824/25m, as that is where her parents were living at that time. No record has been found of the marriage, however the courthouse in Dearborn County was burned in 1826 therefore some records previously to that were destroyed, and this could be the reason the marriage has not been found. One source indicates that the parents of Nathaniel and Ephraim might have been Hiram Lemming and Ann Pike, but this has not been confirmed one way or the other. Another descendant of Nathaniel and I have submitted our DNA to Ancestry and we both match DNA with descendants of Job Liming of Monmouth County, NJ and his wife Rachel Johnson.
Noting the gap of 19 years between the birth of Nathaniel Lemming and his brother Ephraim, there surely were other siblings in between.
In searching for possible siblings of Nathaniel and Ephraim Lemming, I have compiled a list of those I've found in Ohio and Indiana census records who were born in New Jersey and Ohio from 1790-1820. Naturally this is a long shot, but a beginning of somewhere to search.
A possible son of Unknown Lemming?
Note from Don Ebbeler:
A Daniel Leming appears in the 1850 census in Jordan Twp, Warren Co., IN and he, his wife and a son appear in
Jordan Cemetery tombstone extractions under the surname Lemon. There is no proven connection with Nathaniel
and Ephraim Lemming, but he appears in Warren Co. about the same time as Ephraim and his birthdate of 28 Apr 1797
is not completely inconsistent with the purported marriage date of the parents of Nathaniel and Ephraim, 16 Nov 1796
or the birth of Nathaniel in 1800. It may be that the surname was indeed Lemon and the Leming spelling was erroneous.1850 US Census

Samuel was born on 21 Apr 1832 in Miami Co., OH 7 and
died on 11 Jan 1896 in Tacoma, Pierce Co., WA, at age 63.8
Samuel stayed in Ohio after his parents moved to Indiana, and in 1848 when he was 16 years
old, he worked to support himself by doing various work for Jesse Martindale, and others. He
moved to Warren Co., IN, where his parents were living, and married Juliette Lemming, daughter
of Nathaniel and Jane McGahan Lemming. He moved his family to Nebraska for a short time,
then returned to Warren Co. Eventually, he left Warren Co. for good and settled in Tacoma,
Pierce Co., WA.The following notes on Samuel Garrard are from Florence Gerard Quinn, great-granddaughter of
Samuel and Juliette. These notes were written October 31, 1998.1862--1865 Samuel Garrard fought in the Civil War in 100th Infantry Co. G, Indiana Volunteers.
He became a Corporal. While he was serving he had chronic digestive problems, which caused
some kidney failure later on. On May 13, 1864 Samuel was engaged in the Battle of Resaca,
Georgia. He received a gunshot wound to the finger on his left hand. Since all the surgeons were
pretty busy at the time; he decided to amputate his finger by himself. In so doing, he shattered the
bone and it would not heal. After several months, he was treated by a General Surgeon at
Cumberland Hospital in Nashville, TN. (I received this info from Nat'l Archives Records on
Samuel's Civil War Records) After the war, Samuel went back to farming in Indiana; but
was suffering from pains received during the Civil War.Fall 1873 Samuel and Juliette left and went to Jefferson CO, Nebraska. During this time, Samuel became an Itinerant Preacher of the First
Rose Creek Conference of the United Brethren Church in Jefferson CO, Nebraska. Abt 1891 Samuel and Juliette left Nebraska arriving in
Tacoma, Pierce CO, WA residing by their son Oliver (now Samuel O) and family. While in Tacoma, Pierce CO, WA, he joined the 1st Epworth
Church in Tacoma."

December 23, 1880A MURDERER AT LARGE
On the 25th of last month ABE. HENRY, a young man of desperate character and who boasts that he has killed four men, residing with his uncle, JOS. LEMING, living in Medina Township, this county, shot his uncle in the arm with a No. 32 ball, from the effects of which he died on the 10th inst. HENRY and his uncle had had trouble on the morning of the 25th because his uncle refused to board him any longer. After the shooting nothing was done more than to hush the matter up, and they so well succeeded that the facts did not reach the ear of the public until LEMING's death.
It appears that during the two weeks intervening between the shooting and the sad ending that HENRY remained at his uncle's. After LEMING's death the attempt was made to arrest HENRY, but he made good his escape. When closely pursued and about to be taken near Rainsville he turned upon his pursuers, and drawing his revolver gave them to understand that he would shoot the first man who attempted to take him. In this affair the name of ex-Sheriff M.H. PEARSON has been tangled, it has been published in the Chicago Times and Tribune that he was shot and killed. There is not truth in the story, as MR. PEARSON had no connection with the matter at all.
LEMING was a good, honest, hard-working farmer and that he should lose his life in such a manner and then the murderer go free is a disgrace to the township where the deed was committed and the county that harbors such a wretch.
Dr. A.V. MOORE was at once called to attend the wounded man and dressed the wound, thinking that in due time it would heal, but in a few days gangrene set in, when the doctor was called again it was too late. LEMING died in great agony. It has now been 13 days since his death and no trace of the murderer is to be found. Why the matter should be kept so quiet and the citizens of Medina township did not investigate, is a matter which demands an explanation.
Note: I can't find it right off hand, but I have a note from a HENRY descendant saying that it is untrue that Abe Henry was guilty of killing Joel Lemming. I will continue to look for this and add it when found.

November 18, 1886A DESPERADO KILLED
"Recently farmers about Battle Ground, Tippecanoe County, had been missing property from their premises and the pilferings had become so extensive that the Horse and Cattle Protective Association took the matter into hand, determined to bring the guilty parties to justice. On Wednesday morning of last week, John C. Shaw, Edwin Birch, John Cunningham, and Jesse Shortridge, of Battle Ground, got on the trail of one Simeon Gerard and of his probable whereabouts. Procuring a double-seated buggy the four started out Wednesday for Attica where they arrived in the evening and immediately made known their business to Marshall Beymer and all started up the river on foot, going up on the west side. Arriving at the mouth of the Kickapoo they discovered a tent which they immediately recognized as their property. A fishing boat was found which also had been stolen. Going inside the tent they found no one, but discovered boots, socks, a clock, spoons, cooking utensils, knives and forks, a pair of eyeglasses, rubber boots, overcoat, a dagger, 2 revolvers, 4 pocket knives, lap robes, a coat and vest, a pair of red woolen mitten, a lady's gossamer, a pair of pants, screw drivers, razors, a double-barreled shotgun, etc., some of the articles being readily identified, and some having the name of the owner plainly marked. The four men concluded to remain until their man returned, and Beymer returned home. A watch was kept all night and at 4 o'clock Thursday morning they decided to take their property, put it in the boat and return to Attica. As by accident one of the party looked in the direction of the west bank of the creek, which is high and steep, and saw a man standing some 30 steps away, and just as he called the attention of his companions, the fellow raised his revolver, aimed and as he was in the act of firing, he fell, rolled down the bank and remained in the tall weeds of the bottom land. No one dared to go to him for they did not know what he might do. when daylight came a search was made and the man found--dead, only a short distance from where he fell. Three buck shot had pierced the right side and breast and on the right forearm. The authorities of Attica were immediately informed and Coroner Lewis of this county sent for, who went to the scene and investigated the matter. The dead man was identified by J. H. Messner, W. P. Ermy, Elisha Little, Chas. Riggs and Robert Hall as Simeon Gerard. Deceased was 48 years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches in height, heavy build, weighing about 180 pounds, dark hair and beard. He was born and raised in this county about 3 miles south of Pine Village. Mr. Lewis rendered a verdict of death from gun shot wound, fired by parties unknown. Mr. Lewis took charge of the body, had it prepared for burial and brought to Hillside Cemetery where it was properly buried Thursday afternoon."

Saturday Morning, November 20, 1886WAS IT MURDER!
Revengeful Relatives After The Horse Company Whose Carbines Filled the Body of
Sim Gerard with Buckshot-Details of the Tradgedy-Gerard Offered no Resistance--Was He Murdered!"The fact that Sim Gerard made a raid upon the silverware belonging to our Battle Ground neighbors would not justify any individual or company in shedding his blood. We are not authorized to do evil that a good result may follow, neither are we justified in taking human life to avenge the taking of a "pewter spoon." Sim Gerard (or Jarret) lived for years in the neighborhood of Pine Village, and was not angelic by any means, and yet he did not have the horns of a demon. The day before his tragic death he rode to Attica with Hon. Elish Little of Warren county, and behaved himself unusually well. He was an athlete, a great wrestler, and prided himself on being able to jump a greater distance than any man in the county. He was not quarrelsome, but would always resent an insult. His greatest fault was found in the fact that his fingers formed a kind of "magnet," and things not his own would naturally follow his hand. It may be that the Battle Ground Horse Detective company took the life of a worthless cuss, but the important question now presents itself, "Why was (he) killed?" Was he likely to take three prisoners and burn them at a stake? Did he quite suddenly (with blood in his eye) get the drop on three men who carried loaded muskets? The JOURNAL don't profess to know anything about the death of Sim Gerard. If he had ambushed himself among the shelving crags and mossy rocks of the secluded Kickapoo and was trying to play "Peekaboo" with our Horse Marines then he died just in time, but if he came out of his hiding place and walked leisurely toward the tent offering no demonstration of harm then the Battle Ground boys have "got their foot in it." The Attica Ledger of yesterday contained the following:
"Sim Gerard was quite well known over the country as Sim Jarret, though the former is his correct name. From youth he had been of a roving disposition and was known for expertness in the use of firearms and in athletic sports. He was one of the finest built small men ever seen in this vicinity, having solid muscles without an ounce of superfluous flesh, and very wiry and able to endure almost any physical hardship. He was a good marksman, it being told of him that he could get a squirrel from the tallest tree with one shot from his revolver. He was in the Union army for a while during the late war, deserting from his regiment and afterwards becoming a bushwhacker. He did not know fear and his dare-devil bravery pulled him through scrapes that would have cause other men to quake in their boots. Simeon was 39 years old. A brother and sister of the deceased are well known and respected citizens of Adams township, Warren county._________________________________________________There have been may rumors flying concerning the killing of Gerard, among them one to the effect that the four men from Battle Ground would be arrested on the charge of murder, and that the brother of the dead man would institute proceedings in that direction. To back this rumor it was also reported that Gerard made no resistance; that he was shot down before being given an opportunity to surrender, that he had no revolver in sight, and that he could have been captured alive with proper precaution. It is quite probable that these and the various other rumors concerning the affair have no real foundation. The Ledger has made diligent inquiries and believes that the report of the tragedy, given in last week's paper is substantially correct. It came from first hand, within an hour after the man was known to be dead, and at present there is no ground for disbelieving it. The verdict of the coroner was "death from buckshot wound, at hands unknown."

Thursday, January 19, 1888John Cunningham, of Tippecanoe county, residing near Battle Ground, committed suicide on Monday, January 9, by jumping from the cupola on his residence, causing instant death. It will be remembered that he was one of the party of three men who in the early part of last year came to Attica, Ind. on the hunt of one Girard, a notorious character of the Wabash who had stolen, as was believed, article from the three men. They got trace of their game at Attica and learned his place of rendevous, and following him up and waiting for him overnight, succeeded early the following morning in killing him. Cunningham, it seems, believed he was the one who fired the fatal shot and this so preyed upon him that he became unbalanced in his mind, and admitted one day to a friend that he found it was with great difficulty that he resisted the tempation to kill himself. The attempt was made the same day he jumped from his cupola to take his life, by firing a gun into his mouth. The family had taken the precaution before hand of drawing the load and thus foiled him in his murderous intent. The deceased was a man advanced in years. Shortly after his acquittal here last spring for the shooting of Girard, he was compelled to borrow $300, and to secure payment of the sme gave a mortgage on his farm. This was the first time in his life he had been compelled to do such a thing, and he felt, as he expressed to friends, that ever since the killing of Girard everything had gone wrong. He believed this firmly and it had such a depressing effect upon his mind that he sought relief in taking his life. The remains were buried last Thursday.

Lafayette Daily Courier, January 8, 1918, Lafayette, IndianaDEATH AT BATTLE GROUND
HENRY C. WATKINS, in his younger days a farmer, died Sunday night at 9:30 o'clock at his
home in Battle Ground. Death was caused by leakage of the heart. He had been ill for six
months. Mr. WATKINS was 69 years old and was born in Maryland, coming to Indiana when
he was 17 years of age. For a number of years he was engaged in farming near Green Hill.
He was a member of the U.B. church at Battle Ground. A widow, ten children, and one sister,
Mrs. GEORGE LAMB, of Battle Ground, survive.*Even though there is a conflict between the birthdate of Henry Watkins and the marriage date
of his parents, the evidence that he belongs to both of these parents is strong. The first husband
of his mother, William McKendre Davis, died in 1845. Also, Henry is not mentioned as an heir
in the estate of William Wright, father of Deborah Wright Watkins, first wife of Henry's father
Josiah. His half-sister, Mary E. Watkins Butterfield, daughter of Josiah Watkins and Deborah
Wright is mentioned in the distribution of William Wright's estate as his granddaughter, and daughter of his deceased daughter Deborah.

___________________________Attempt at Suicide Finally Proves
Successful - Died This Morning
___________________________Marshal Chonkwiler, of Battle Ground, who tried to kill himself on January 8, died at Battle Ground this morning at 9 o'clock. His attempt at suicide was finally successful. Chonkwiler was taken from St. Elizabeth hospital last night to Battle Ground, and care for at the home of Henry Watkins, as noted elsewhere in this paper. Ever since the sensational shooting two weeks ago, Chonkwiler had been at St. Elizabeth hospital under the care of Dr. John S. Morrison. It was thought that he would recover and he was taken to Battle Ground as stated. Dr. Morrison said Chonkwiler refused to have an operation performed. Dr. Biddle took charge of his case. The suicide will be remembered as having happened on the Van Natta farm, east of Battle Ground. Chonkwiler threatened to kill himself, after a discussion with his wife, and she threw her arm in front of the shotgun, with which he tried to end his life. Her arm was blown off, and her husband was shot severely.

GERARD AGAIN!
A Son of the Noted Warren County Desperado Vows to be Avenged."An illegitimate son of the noted Warren county desperado, Simeon Gerard, who our citizens will remember, met his death at the hands of a posse a few years ago on the banks of Kickapoo creek, about four miles north of here, has sworn to avenge the death of his father. HENRY WATKINS* , an uncle of the boy, who lives near Brookston, with whom young Gerard has made his home since boyhood, says the boy reached his majority about two weeks ago and then swore to avenge his father's death by seeking out and killing all parties concerned. He requested-almost demanded-Watkins to be a party to his nefarious plans and upon a flat refusal he vowed not only to kill the men who slew his father but to get even with him (Watkins) also.
From Watkins' house young Gerard went to a neighbor's, Dennis Frazier, at whose place Watkins' daughter, age 16, was employed. He called for the young lady stating that he had a message from her father and the pair walked to the edge of the woods where they were seen a short time after, cracking walnuts. That was the last seen of them. The Frazier family becoming alarmed at the girl's continued absence notified her father. Thinking they had gone to the old home at Independence Mr. Watkins started in pursuit, stopping at La Fayette and consulting with Prosecutor Wood who advised him to come to this city and get out a warrant for abduction and send the officials after the pair. Watkins came to Independence where he was informed that young Gerard had crossed the river at that place but was alone and his intention was to go to Illinois. Search was instituted in that state but availed nothing and no clue could be obtained of either him or the girl. Mr. Watkins thinks the girl has either been killed or held against her wishes in order that young Gerard may be avenged upon his uncle for refusing to aid him in his plans of revenge. Such a man at large is a menace to any community and he should be apprehended in his career as soon as possible."
[*Henry Watkins was not the uncle of Ira Garrard, rather a first-cousin by marriage, his wife being Jane Gerard, cousin to Ira. It is believed that the girl mentioned in this article was Henry and Jane's daughter Gertrude, who, in 1894, married Ira Garrard, her first cousin-once removed. They were married six years, with the marriage ending in divorce at the end of 1900 in Warren Co.]
