Ulysses Grant Sholty - died 17 Apr 1889 Waveland Independent Friday April 21, 1899 -- After many weeks of intense suffering, Rev. U.G. Sholty passed away Monday night at 7:15. The body was taken to Wabash where the funeral was held Wednesday. Ulysses Grant Sholty was born at Laketon, Wabash County July 25, 1868. He united with the First Methodist Church of Wabash when but 13. When a young man he acted as secretary of the YMCA of Wabash and did a most helpful work among the young men. He worked on his father's farm till he was 20 and then went to Evanston, Ill where he studied theology in Garritt Biblical Institute. His first work as a minister was in North Dakota where he was made Deacon April 23, 1893. He here held two charges, first at Gladstone and then Steele. In 1895 he returned to Indiana and took charge of the church at Leiter's Ford where he remained until his removal to Waveland in September 1898. On Sept 13, 1896, he was ordained tot he office of elder, at the meeting of the Northwest Conference of Indiana, held that year at Terre Haute. He was married Jan 22, 1891 to Miss Ella C. Roser of Wabash. To them have been born 4 children, all of who m survive the father, although the babe is in a critical condition at this time. Mr. Sholty was attacked with the grip in February and acute Brights' disease developed. He held his last public service March 5 since which time he was confined to the house. At times he suffered intensely but he bore the pain uncomplainingly. During his short lifetime he was instrumental in pointing many a soul to the Savior and his supreme ambition in life was to win men and women to Christ. In his death the church has been deprived of a faithful pastor and the community lost a valuable citizen and a God-fearing man. Submitted to Wabash Co, USGenWeb, 28 March 2008 by Karen Zach.
