Newport Hoosier State, Newport, Indiana, January 17, 1900

On Monday last, Jacob Underwood, who resides west of Highland, Helt Township, walked out to his son David, who resides on the Dugger farm. In the afternoon he went out in the woods with his son, and all of a sudden his son noticed him staggering and in the act of falling down when he caught him. He was removed to the house and Dr. O.M. Keyes sent for. The doctor says he was stricken down by paralysis, and gives it as his opinion that there is very little hope for his recovery, owing to the fact that Mr. Underwood is now past 81 years of age.
