Death of ELI PALMER -- The subject of this notice resided about 5 miles west of town, and died on last Sunday afternoon from chronic diarrhea, a disease which he contracted in the Army. The deceased was a member of Co. I, 43rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and was as good a soldier as ever enlisted in this country. He was about 45 years of age, and had been a citizen of this township for many years. He leaves a wife and a host of warm friends who deeply lament his sad death.
Mrs. Harlow H. MYERS on Thursday received word on the death of her sister, Elsie May (Carmack) Parker at St. Johns' Michigan. Mrs. Parker was born Aug 28, 1915 north of Dana, Vermillion Co. the daughter of Fred Orin and Sylvia Douglass Carmack. The family moved in 1920 to St. Johns. Other survivors include the husband, Curtis, two sons, Orin and Lee both at the mother-in-law; Dora Parker; two brothers, Orin and Carmack of St. Johns, Everett B. Carmack of Lansing.
Mrs. EVA LOUISA PARRETT, wife of R.W. PARRETT of this place, died on Thursday last at the residence of her parents, at Newburgh, this State, aged about 31 years. The deceased had been an invalid for many months, and suffered untold misery. She was afflicted with an ovarian tumor, which, on examination after death, proved to be as large as a gallon bucket. She was a kind and amiable woman, and very highly esteemed by the citizens of this place, where she had been a resident for 11 or 12 years. She leaves a husband and 4 bright and intelligent children.
Mrs. Lydia Zener Parrett, widow of the late Dr. John W. Parrett of Newport, died about 3 o'clock Wednesday morning, February 9, 1916, aged 84 yrs, 5 mos, and 21 days. She was a daughter of Adam and Mary Zener, pioneer residents of Newport. Her father was born in Kentucky in 1803 and settled in Newort in 1826, two years after the organization of the county. He was married to Miss Mary Hopkins in Newport in 1828, a daughter of James Hopkins. The deceased was born in Newport Aug. 18, 1831 and, with the exception of a few years, redided in Newport all of her life. Seh was the oldest child of a large family. She was married to Rev. John W. Parrett Mar. 20, 1851, who was at the time pastor of the :Methodist church at Newport, who was later given the degree of Doctor of Divinity by DePaul University;, where he attended school and to which he rendered every material aid. To this union were born two children - Robert Adam Parrett, deceased, and Martha Ellen Parrett, now the wife of Dr. M. L. Hall, who is the only surviving child, and with whom the deceased lived at the old homestead where she lived for more than fifty years. Besides the daughter, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive. She was a faithful, lovable wife, a kind and affectionate neighbor and grandmother, a good neighbor and true friend. The funeral services were held at the home Fri. afternoon. Rev O.B. Rippetoe, the local pastor, offeciated, assisted by Rev. John S. Brown. The music consisted of two vocal solos by Miss Edith Conley and a duet by Miss Conley and Mrs. O. T. Evans. Burial took place at the Newport cemetery, three miles northwest of town.
Undertaker G.L. Watson conducted the funeral services of Mrs. THOMAS PATRICK, Wednesday, at 10 o'clock, at the Patrick home, and burial was at the Thomas Cemetery. Ralph Watson, of Seattle, WA, was the only son who lives in the western states that was able to get home to his mother's funeral.
Alex T. Patterson mechanic who helped build the toll bridge across the Wabash at the foot of Ohio St and work on the structure begun in 1846, finished 1847. Built entirely of wood. On Feb 10 1847 the first attempt was made to open or slide the draw. When the draw had reached its center to a point where it was a balance, there was a sudden crash and the draw broke off short, the east half falling into the river carrying with it one of the builders, T. A. Madison, and two of his construction workers, Henry Smith and George Eastman. Madison and Smith were rescued but Eastman was drowned and his body was not recovered until April 1 following the disaster. Alex had been sent on shore to sharpen some saws, or he would have been on the bridge at the time of the incident. He later helped build the old Clinton toll bridge in 1853 and made his home there.

CLINTON, Ind Sept 23. Mrs. Phenie Patterson, age 68 is dead following a
surgical operation at St. Anthonys hospital in Terre Haute. Mrs.
Patterson moved with her family from Ohio to Clinton thirty-five years
ago. She is survived by her son, Charles Patterson, of Clinton, and two
daughters (Mrs.) Frank Potter and Mrs. Dan Potter, of Terre Haute.

Clinton, Ind., Nov. 1. (Gazette Special) Mrs. Sarah Patterson, wife of Alex. T. Patterson, died this morning at her home of Third street. Mrs. Patterson was on of the pioneers of Vermillion County being about eighty years old. She leaves besides an aged husband one daughter and one son. The interment will be in the Clinton cemetery Sunday afternoon.
During last Friday, occurred the departure of CHARLES PAYTON, near St. Bernice, in his 74th year. He was an old pioneer, a kind father, grandfather, and friend. Surely he will be sadly missed, but a good man has fallen. The bereaved have the sympathies of the entire community.
The wife of James Payton was buried in the Higbie cemetery last Saturday. She leaves a husband and ten children to mourn the loss of a broken home. The many friends of the family sympathize with them in their loss of a devoted wife and faithful mother. She was a model woman.
Adam Pearman, 68 years old, died at 6:30 o'clock yesterday evening at the residence at North Terre Haute. He is survived by the widow, Martha, three sons, J.C. Pearman, of Seattle, Wash., Walter Pearman, of Terre Haute, and Oscar Pearman, of North Terre Haute, and one brother, Samuel Pearmnn of Dana, Ind. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 o'clock Saturday morning with burial in Grand View cemetery.

Betty Jane Pearman, 71, of Terre Haute died at 9:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, in Union Hospital. She was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Sullivan County to William Frank McCombs and Delpha Heck McCombs. Her husband, William Pearman Sr., died in 1995. Survivors include two sons, William J. Pearman Jr. and Jim Pearman; one daughter, Judy Pearman; one sister, Martha Lee Wright; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Roselawn Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. David Lucas officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation. Clinton, Ind., April 6 - Mrs. Celia Anna Pearman, age 63, died at the
Vermillion county hospital here Sunday following a short illness. Mrs.
Pearman is survived by the husband, Aquilla, six sons, Ruie of
Hillsdale, Marvin, Hersey, Ward and Bruce Pearman of Center
neighborhood, northwest of here, and Fred, at home; three daughters
(Mrs.) Mabel Glaze (Mrs.) May Striker and Helen Pearman, all of
Youngstown; three sisters (Mrs.) Cora Koonce, Dana (Mrs.) Hattie Sturm
and Mrs. Hannah Payson, both of Fairview Park; two brothers Ava Beard,
Clinton and Albert Beard, Dana; also 14 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. The body will be removed from the Frist undertaking
establishment Monday evening to the residence at Tennessee Valley.
Funeral services at Tennessee valley church, 3 o'clock p.m. Tuesday,
with burial in Helt's Prairie cemetery.
Charles E. Pearman, 62, of Terre Haute, died at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 1993, in Union Hospital. He retired as a corrections officer from the Indiana State Prison at Putnamville. He was born August 18, 1930 at Terre Haute to Charles Edward Pearman, Sr. and Odetta M. Treager (or Troager). Survivors include his wife, Mary Jones Pearman; two sons, Charles E. III and Joseph A. of Terre Haute; three daughters, Paula Harkness, Iris Pearman, and Dianna Pearman of Terre Haute; three brothers, Bill and Jack of Prairie Creek and Alec of Rensselaer; one sister, Mary Bays of Farmersburg; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. he was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and a former employee of Stran-Steel. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of Vigo County Conservation Club and Lawton Byrun Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Services are 1 pm Wednesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harvey Weaver officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn Cemetery, with graveside military rites by post 972. David Pearman, youngest son of Elbert (Sebert) and Sara Pearman was born December 4, 1842, and died November 12, 1917 at the home of his daughter Mrs. James Beard, 4 miles southeast of Dana, aged 74 years, 11 months and 8 days. He was united in marriage to Lydia A. Smith August 12, 1866, who died May 5, 1904. Through this union was born four children, James Ollie Beard, Ora Saxton, Lillie Taylor, all of who are living.
He joined the United Brethren church at Hanaman chapel shortly after his marriage and lived a true and consistent Christian life.
In April 1861 he enlisted in the Civil War in Co. A. 31st Indiana. He was a brave and gallant soldier and was engaged in forty-two great battles. He returned home at the close of the war to fight the battles of life. He often said: "Oh! how I love my flag - Old Glory." He lived in this county all of his life with the exception of three years in Illinois.
His second marriage took place in July 1908 to Parthena Kearns, who died in July 1912.
He leaves to mourn his loss four daughters, eleven grand children, eight great grandchildren and one brother, Wm. Pearman of Hillsdale, and a host of relatives and friends. The community has lost a good citizen, the children a kind and loving father; the church a faithful member, the few remaining soldiers of the Civil war a loyal comrade of the flag.
The funeral services were held Wednesday at the Tennessee Valley church. Rev. Dye, a U.B. minister formerly of St. Bernice, now of Center Point, Ind., officiated.
Burial followed in the Helt's Prairie cemetery.
First Sgt. Donald William "Buster" Pearman, 64 of Springfield, Il. died at 8:15 a.m. Friday at St. John's Hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1925 in Blanford, Indiana., the son of William "Ted" and Mary Thompson Pearman. He married Barbara Saltsman in 1977 in Springfield. He retired after 12 years of service at the Illinois State Museum. Mr. Pearman was are a retired 30 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. During his 30 years of service, Mr. Pearman received many awards and citations including the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Services Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle Medal, Expert Handgun Medal and Presidential Unit Citation from President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was a member of the VFW Post 755, Port Royal 242 AFM of South Carolina, Ansar Temple, Ansar Shrine Retirees Club and Valley of Springfield Consistory. Surviving are his wife, Barbara, mother, Mary Pearman of Springfield, IL, brother Paul Pearman of Springfield, IL, several aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Services will be at 10:30 a.m.. Monday at Bisch Memorial Home, with Rev. Ronald Conway officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
MONTEZUMA Dorothy Pearman, 75, of Clinton and formerly of Montezuma died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, in Clinton Nursing Home. She was born June 29, 1922, in Montezuma to Walter Manwaring and Florence Garrett Manwaring. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Pearman, Jan. 27, 1987. Survivors include one son, Donald Norman; three sisters, Rosemary Craft, Shirley Manwaring and Martha Manwaring; four brothers, Joe Manwaring, Bill Manwaring, Richard Manwaring and Larry Manwaring; two grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. There are no services or visitation. Cremation is scheduled. Burial is in Bono Cemetery in Dana. Brown Funeral Home assisted.

OBITUARY
Evah Loriene Pearman, a little sunbeam, came into the home of Elisha
and Lenora Pearman, Oct, 6, 1918. She was a bright eyed
little babe and soon with her winsome ways twined her chubby little
arms in all her innocence about papa and mama. Nay, even
more! Mid paths of love she won the hearts of brothers and
sisters. But, our Heavenly Father caller her for one of his
jewels and so she is here no more. Her passing occurred Sept.
15, 1919. Not quite one year did the precious little darling
spend in the home, but God in his wisdom took her home and anchored her
safe in heaven.
True it is sad and lonely for loved ones, but they have the blessed assurance of knowing little Evah Loriene suffers no more and is a bright and shining angel up in heaven.
Her passing is mourned by her parents and brothers and sisters as follows: William, Roscoe, Martin, Oma, Josephine, Audrey, Leatha and Viola.
Short funeral services were held from the home, Rev. E.J. Williams
officiating. Interment in the Highland Cemetery.

Newport, Ind., Aug 4 - Special - George Sebert Pearman, 64 years old, died at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis at 2:45 o'clock Saturday morning. He was a member of the American Legion here. Surviving are the widow, Della; five daughters (Mrs.) Catherine Gray of Newport; Mrs. Mary Ellen Kerlin of Delphi, Ind.; Mrs. Martha Jane Sowers of Rossville, Ill.; Mrs. Helen Joan Randall of Tulsa, Okla. and Mrs. Betty Jean Weaver of Newport; two sons, Samuel and George, Jr., both of Newport; three sisters (Mrs.) Mable Bodenbaugh of Tangier (Mrs.) Vina Beckleheimer, and Mrs. Lorene Ledman, both of Lafayette; three brothers, John of Montezuma, Lee of Newport and Ted of Tulsa, Okla.; and 20 grandchildren. Paris, Ill, July 16 (Special) - Services for H. Allen Pearman, 51,
Paris druggist for many years, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the
Ward-Sutton Funeral Home. Burial will be in Edgar cemetery.
Mr. Pearman, a pony exhibitor and breeder, died Thursday evening of a heart attack while at an annual harness show at Lexington, Ky. He suffered a light attack while showing a pony pair in the show, and collapsed a short time later. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Lexington hospital.
He is survived by his mother (Mrs.) Alice Pearman; his wife, the former Katherine Lake; two daughters (Mrs.) Richard Ellis of Castro Valley, Calif., and Sara, at home; a brother, L. Cliff Pearman of St. Louis; anf four sisters (Mrs.) Julia Tanner (Mrs.) Elizabeth Ress (Mrs.) Helen Tucker and Mrs. Ruth Ferrell, all of Paris.
Harold Ray Pearman, 74 of Hillsdale died at 1:37 pm Firday, November 25, 2005 in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. He was employed at Midland Glass and retired from the Vermillion County Parks Department in June 2004. He was born November 28, 1930 in Hillsdale to Edward Pearman and Myrtle Allen Pearman. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Lambert Pearman, whom he married May 5, 1951 in Clinton; one son Michael Ray Pearman (wife-Cathy) of Clinton; three daughters, Debra (Thomas-Rex) of Montezuma, Susan Pearman and Keshia Pearman, both of Hillsdale, a grandson, Michael A. Pearman of Clinton, four granddaughters, Stephanie Walker (husband Shanon) of Fort Campbell, KY, Wendi Collins (husband-Billy) of Clarksville, Tn, Emily Maltre (husband-Brandon) of Canton, MI and Melissa M. Pearman of Clinton; five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Pearman, April 1988. He will be buried in the Highland Cemetery with graveside military services.

HILLSDALE John D. Pearman, 84, of Hillsdale died at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born Oct. 7, 1913, in Hillsdale to Edward Pearman and Myrtle Allen Pearman. Survivors include his wife, Alberta M. Sykes Pearman; two sons, Gene Pearman and Jerald Pearman; two brothers, Donald Pearman and Harold Pearman; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Judith Lynn Pearman, 45, of Terre Haute died at 3:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, in Union Hospital. She was born Nov. 30, 1960, in Terre Haute to William L. Pearman Sr. and Betty Jane McCombs Pearman. Survivors include two brothers, William L. Pearman Jr. and James E. Pearman; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Hillsdale, Ind., Dec 16. - Mrs. Lydia Pearman, 83 years old, "endearingly called "Aunt Lydia", died at the home of her grandson, Wade Pearman, north of Hillsdale, at 2 a.m. She had been ill for a long time and did not complain. Her neighbors and friends have many kind words for her. She is survived by one daughter (Mrs.) Henry Schaffer, north of Clinton. The funeral will be conducted from the Hillsdale M. E. church, at 10:30 Wednesday, and burial will be at Pisgah.

BLANFORD Michael Lee Pearman, 15, of Blanford died at 5:59 a.m. Sunday, June 21, 1998, in Rawlins, Wyo., from an automobile accident. He was a sophomore at South Vermillion High School. He was born Nov. 13, 1982, in Paris, Ill., to Jeff Pearman and Donna Finger Pearman. Survivors include his parents of Blanford; one brother, Darren Pearman of Blanford; grandmothers, Doris Pearman of St. Bernice and Joann Finger of Blanford; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jimmy Pearman on March 21, 1985, and Robert Finger on Sept. 23, 1995. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mrs. Myrtle Allen Pearman, 77 years old, died Saturday night at
Vermillion County Hospital in Clinton. She was a member of the
Evangelical United Brethren Church. Surviving are the stepmother (Mrs.)
Ida Mae Allen of Hillsdale; three daughters (Mrs.) Blanche Brown of
Cayuga (Mrs.) Kathlee Gill and Mrs. Annabelle Peck both of Clinton; 5
sons Ralph of San Diego, California, Paul of Chesterton, Indiana, John
Donald, Harold and Joseph all of Hillsdale; three sisters Mrs. Sarah
Lough of Rigefarm, Il (Mrs.) Jane Myers of Bloomingdale and Mrs. Anna
Turner of Indianapolis; two brothers, Charles Allen of Tangier and
William Allen of Rockville, 26 grandchildren and 31
great-grandchildren. Services will be at teh Evangelical United
Brethren Church of Hillsdale at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The
Rev. Loren Page will officiate. Burial will be in Wolf Creek Cemetery;
Friends may call at the Brown Funeral Home in Montezuma.
CLINTON - Reeve Jack Pearman Sr., 72, of Clinton died at 9:48 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, 1996, in Vermillion Convalescent Center. He was born May 10, 1924, in Bloomingdale to Sullivan Pearman and Hila Melton Pearman. Survivors include three sons, Jack Pearman Jr., Donald Pearman and John Garrigus; three daughters, Rose Minnick, Elizabeth Ann Holt and Sandy St. John; one sister, Julia Mizell; one brother, Jean Pearman; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Ruth Anna Goss Pearman, 80, of Terre Haute and formerly of Hillsdale, Montezuma and Clinton, died Tuesday night, Jan. 15, 2002, in Lakeview Nursing Center. She was born May 21, 1921, in Saline City to the Rev. Vernon B. Goss and Jessie Pearl Goss. Her husband, James Gordon Pearman, died Sept. 20, 1994. Survivors include two sons, Bill Pearman of Clinton and Mike of Dana; three daughters, Elnora Thomas of Dana, and Phyllis Landrus and Barbara Haskell, both of Terre Haute; two brothers, Harry Goss of Kokomo and John Goss of North Vernon; two sisters, Gertrude Monts of Marion and Sarah Goebel of Muncie; eight grandchildren, Angela Parrish and Stacey Chapman, both of St. Bernice, Shelley Thatcher of Mooresville, Greg Landrus and Eric Landrus, both of Terre Haute, Lori Ann Person of Bloomington, Ill., Alan Haskell of Greenwood and Diana Pearman of Dana; 17 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by three brothers; and two sisters. She was a member of Tangier Christian Church and was active in the music program at Lakeview. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Frist Funeral Homein Clinton, with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial is in Helt's Prairie Cemetery, rural Clinton. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Clinton, IN, Samuel Pearman 93 years old, familiarly known to Dana residents as "Uncle Sam" died at his residence there Monday. Mr. Pearman was a life-long resident of Vermillion County. He was a veteran of the Civil War, in which he served with the Fifteenth Indiana Independent Artillery; an elder of the Christian Church, and until two years ago active in his trade as a carpenter. He is survived by the widow (Mrs.) Margaret Pearman and two children, Thomas of Terre Haute and Miss Effie Pearman of Dana, two granddaughters (Mrs.) Joe Davis of Dana and Miss Martha Pearman of Terre Haute and three great-grandchildren. Military funeral services will be held at the Dana Methodist Church at 10 o'clock Thursday in charge of the American Legion. The Rev G.S. Reedy will preside. Burial will be in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF DANA PASSES AWAY
Thomas Pearrman of 1718 South Ninth Street, received word Monday of the
death of his father, Samuel Pearman, at his home in Dana. Samuel
Pearman would have been 93 years old in March. He was a veteran of the
civil war. Surviving are the widow, Margaret H. Pearman, a daughter
Effie and the son Thomas. Funeral arrangements are not completed.
Thomas Pearman is an employee of the Jackson Hill Coal and Coke
Company.
Miss Sarah Pearman, a young lady of Helt township, the daughter of the late Ben Pearman, died on Friday last, and her funeral was preached at the Tennessee Baptist church on Sunday, after which her remains were conveyed to the Helt's Prairie cemetery for interment.

William Pearman formerly of Hillsdale, died at the home of his
grand-daughter, Mrs. Leafy Jackson of Springfield, Ill., Friday,
December 21. He was a Civil War veteran about 90 years old. The funeral
was held at the Hillsdale U.B. church Saturday afternoon, with burial
in Helts Prairie cemetery.
William Henry Pearman, who resided three miles southwest of Hillsdale, was born May 10, 1882, and died August 29, 1910, making his age 28 years, 3 months, and 19 days. He was born near the Conley schoolhouse, Helt Township. His parents Wm. H. Pearman and Laura B. Pearman (nee Payton) both died when he and his brother Wade were small. They were raised by their grandmother Mrs. Samuel Pearman (nee Lydia Jackson). He was united in marriage to Lucy McBride, daughter of Jacob and Aeinath McBride, December 31, 1902. He leaves a wife, one brother, and a number of relatives, and friends. I have been acquainted with this young man since childhood. To know him was to love him. I called on him several times during his illness and his conversation on his travels to the Holy Land was grand. He was ready to leave this world of sin for the bright beyond. God hides his flowers in the bosom of the earth. "Till summer comes again and soon this flower in the casket will be placed in the bosom of the earth to await the resurrection morn he so frequently spoke of. He always had a pleasant smile when I called on him. He said he wanted to keep the smile till he heard the summons, "Child come home." Once he said if we have Christ to sustain us why should we fear death and the grave.
The funeral services were held at Salem Church Wednesday morning being conducted by Rev. M. W. O'Brien, a U. B. minister of St Bernice. Burial took place at Helt's Prairie cemetery. A Friend.
William H. "Ted" Pearman, 82, of Springfield died at 10:17 p.m Friday at St. John's Hospital. He was born October 18, 1905 in Hillsdale, Indiana., the son of Elisha and Lenora Long Pearman. He married Mary Thompson in 1923 in Paris, IL. Mr. Pearman was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Surviiving are his wife, Mary; two sons Donald and Paul Pearman, both of Springfield, IL; two sisters, Oma Williamson and Mary Brown, both of Springfield, IL; two grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; several neices and nephews. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Bish Memorial Home, with the Rev. Robert Green officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
CLINTON - Annabelle Peck, 80, of Clinton died at 5:32 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, 1997, in Vermillion Convalescent Center. She was a homemaker. She was born Aug. 19, 1916, in Hillsdale to Edward Pearman and Myrtle Allen Pearman. Her husband, Kenneth Peck, died Nov. 25, 1984. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley Thomas and C.G. Thomas of Clinton; four brothers, Harold Pearman, John D. Pearman and Joseph Pearman, all of Hillsdale, and Donald Pearman of Montezuma; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of First Church of The Nazarene. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Albert Riggle officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park in North Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.
HARLEY H. PELL Sr., 89, of 117 North Seventh Street, West Terre Haute, died at 11:15 p.m. Saturday at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was the brother of Clinton resident Alfred Pell.
He was a retired coal miner and was a member of Jerusalem Lodge No. 99 F. & A.M., Bethany United Church of Christ, and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute.
Mr. Pell is also survived by his wife, Mantolee; one son, Harley H. Jr. of Terre Haute; 3 daughters, Geneva Weeks of Indianapolis; Kathleen Willis of Davis, CA; and Opal Spitler of West Terre Haute; one other brother, Melvin Pell of Harmony; 6 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bedino Chapel of the Valley with Rev. Alvin Eicklefs officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, and friends may call after 4 p.m. today. Memorial services will also be conducted by Jerusalem Lodge No. 99 F. & A.M. of Clinton at 7:30 p.m. today at the chapel.
Clinton, Ind - Lavern H. Pender, 65, RR 3, Clinton died at 2:1 p.m. Tuesday in Vermillion County Hospital. He was a retired truck driver at the Newport DuPont Plant and was a member of the Fairview Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Raymond, Indianapolis and Preston, Centenary, Ind; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Price, Terre Haute and Mrs. Elaine Johnson, RR 3, Clinton; two brothers, Roy Shereville, Ind and Dewey, Hobart, Ind; a sister, Mrs. June Ellis, Mishawaka, Ind; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Frist Funeral Home with Rev. Chester Martin officiating. Burial will be in Helt's Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday.
Clinton - MARION L. "BAB" PERRY, 78, 1036 S. Third St., died at 11:16 P..M. Monday in Vermillion County Hospital. He was area supervisor for the city of Clinton. He was born October 25, 1906, in Clinton to Francis Perry and Betty Snider Perry. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth; two sons, Larry and Forrest, both of Clinton; 2 brothers, Bural of Benton Harbor, MI; and Oscar of Wellston, MI; 8 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Jerusalem Lodge 99 F & AM, Clinton Commandry 48 Knights of Templar, Vermillion Chapter 125 Royal Arch Masons, Vermillion and Parke County Low clubs, York Rite Terre Haute, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute and Jerusalem Chapter 254 Order of Eastern Star. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Elmore officiating. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, with Masonic memorial service at 7.
About 5 o'clock in the afternoon of one day last week, a large bright meteor passed over Helt township. A man by the name of JOHN PETERS, residing a short distance west of Highland, on JAMES QUINLAN's farm, witnessed the flight of the meteor as it passed over, and was considerably frightened by it. He told his neighbors he was satisfied it foretold of some fearful accident that would befall him in a short time. He friends paid no attention to what he said, supposing that the terrible fright caused him to talk that way. The next afternoon, he was in the woods felling a tree. It was about 5 o-clock in the afternoon, near the same time as when the meteor passed over the evening before. The tree he was felling struck another, which threw back a large limb with great force, striking Mr. PETERS on the back of the head and killing him instantly. Hon. JAMES OSBORN was present, who immediately reported the sad affair to his wife and family. Mr. PETERS was a man about 40 years of age, a quiet and peaceable citizen, and had the respect of all his neighbors. He was in poor circumstances, and his family will have hard work to combat poverty during the cold winter.
THOMAS PIERCE, of this place, a barber by occupation, dropped dead at 12:15 o'clock this morning. He was afflicted with consumption, and had been in feeble health for several weeks. Last night, he had attacks of smothering and coughing, and could not rest in bed. He got up and had been sitting by the fire quite awhile when he had a coughing spell and started for the bed. Just as he reached it, he fell over on his face and expired in a few moments. Mr. PIERCE was about 40 years of age, and served in the late war as a private soldier, where he lost a finger in battle, on which he drew a pension from the government of $4 per month. He leaves a wife and 3 little children in indigent circumstances. We hope the charitable disposed people of Newport will come to the relief of the distressed family and help them in their time of need. The funeral will take place at 1 o'clock this afternoon.
Covington - Martha Jane Piearcen, 84, a life resident of Highland Township in Vermillion County and Fulton Township in Fountain County died Friday in the Small Nursing Home at Waynetown, where she had been the last several years. A daughter of Marquess Lafayette and Nancy Shannon Prevo, she was born Aug 22, 1886 near Perrysville. She married Clarence William Piearcen on Sept 19, 1906. He died Feb 14, 1964. Surviving is a foster son, Warren Meeker of Oceanside, Calif. Mrs. Piearcen was a member of the Cauyga Presbyterian Church and Evergreen Cap 1652 of Royal Neighbors of America at Gessie. Funeral services will be conducted 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington with burial in Lower Mound Cemetery.
Rosedale -- Double funeral servicees for John Pippin, Jr. 50 and his wife, Edna 37 who died Friday in Indianapolis will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cottrell Funeral Home. Mr. Pippin, a former Clinton resident was a WWII veteran, a member of the Shelbyville American Legion Post, Eagles Lodge in Indianapolis and Implement Workers of America, UAW. He is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Janice Boatman, Rosedale; Mrs. Janet Brown, Universal and Mrs. Jean Brock, Clinton; two brothers and eight sisters in Kentucky and 11 grandchildren. Mrs. Pippin is survived by two sons and a father in George and step daughters. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery. Friends may call.
At 3 o'clock on last Saturday morning, the spirit of Mrs. E.B. PLACE, wife of WALTER J. PLACE, took its flight for that brighter and better world. The deceased was about 56 years of age, and had been a resident of this county for a number of years. She took down ill last November and had been a constant sufferer ever since till death put an end to her existence. She was a kind and cheerful-hearted woman, and always ready to extend the hand of charity to those in need of assistance. The young people of Newport had no better friend, or one who would do more to promote their social enjoyment. She leaves many warm and sympathizing friends who sadly regret her death. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, and was very respectably attended. Short services were had at the residence, Rev. M.L. GREEN, pastor of the M.E. Church officiating, after which her remains were conveyed to the Thomas Cemetery, 2 miles northwest of town, and quietly laid to rest.
John Ponton last Sunday passed from earth to try the realities of an
unknown world. Was born in Ohio in 1830. At time of his death was 56
years 9 months and 6 days old. He was a member of the M.E. church for
thirty years, and lived a true devoted christian life. His funeral was
preached at the Salem church and his remains were quietly laid away in
the Helts Prairie Cemetery. The bereaved have the sympathy of their
many friends.

OLLIE PLINY PONTON, 86, of Route 1, Hillsdale, died at 2 p.m. Monday at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
Mr. Ponton was born March 29, 1896, in Indiana, a son of O.P.M. and Mary Ada Amon Ponton. He was a member of the Hillsdale Odd Fellows Lodge and the Clinton Half Century Club.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Kaufman of Hillsdale, Mildred Howard of Indianapolis, and Polly Hamm of Mattoon, IL; one son, Fred of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Nora Ponton of Dana; one sister, Mary Garlinghouse of Indianapolis, and one brother, Robert of Indianapolis.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brown Funeral Home in Montezuma with Rev. Carl Gilbert in charge. Burial will be in Helt's Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Mrs. CHARLOTTE FOOS POTTER, 76 years old, died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. Dudley, 1512 South Fifteenth St. She is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. E. Dudley, of Terre Haute; Mrs. Rex James, of Hume, IL; and Mrs. Amanda Ross, northeast of Terre Haute. The funeral will be held at 11 o'clock, Sunday morning at the Salem Church. Burial will be in the Helt Prairie Cemetery, north of Clinton, IN.
Body of WILLIAM POTTER Comes Here -- The body of WILLIAM POTTER, who died in West Terre Haute, at well over 70 years of age, was brought to Clinton yesterday for burial at the old Helt's Prairie graveyard. Mr. Potter was a pioneer of the neighborhood between the prairie and Center Church. Mrs. Rex James of Hillsdale, Effie Potter of Parke County and a son, Dudley, are surviving children.

After a Long and Painful Illness
On Sunday last at about 6 oclock, a.m., the subject of this notice,
after a long and painful illness, laid down his armor, and his spirit
was wafted on wings of love to that beautiful world, where all is peace
and happiness.
The deceased was born in New Jersey in the year 1808, and had been a resident of this county since 1844. He was a good citizen and was held in the highest esteem by the people of this county, who had honored him with the office of Sheriff for two terms, and on last October had elected him to the important office of Real Estate Appraiser of Vermillion County by over 600 majority. He was an industrious and energetic man, and by economy in business had accumulated a large fortune, probably not less than $50,000.
His funeral took place on Monday last and was largely attended. The services were held at Lebanon Church and were conducted by Rev. J.M. MONTGOMERY, M.E. pastor of Newport circuit.
At one o'clock this morning occurred the death of STEPHEN PRICE, one of the oldest colored men in this city, aged 73 years. The deceased was the father of ISRAEL, HENRY, and ANDERSON PRICE, the well known barbers here. The deceased was a resident here for over 30 years, and was well liked. The funeral will occur tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o-clock, from the late residence, on Third Street between Mulberry and Cherry Streets.
On the 7th of July (Mrs.) NANCY PYLES departed this life, aged 39 years. Her illness lasted 5 weeks, then was called to rest. She leaves a husband, 5 children, and a host of friends to mourn with the family in their bereavement.
Mrs. NANCY PYLES, wife of SAMUEL PYLES, died last Thursday after an
illness of about two weeks. Possessed with fine social qualities, she
drew around her a large circle of friends to whom she was warmly
attached, and by whom she will be sadly missed.
