Death of an Old Citizen -- WILLIAM L. NAYLOR, of Eugene, died at his residence at 11 oclock a.m. on Monday last, after a lingering illness of about 5 months. Mr. NAYLOR was born in Ohio in 1821, and emigrated to this county in 1828, where he resided up to the day of his death. He had been engaged in the mercantile business in this county for over a quarter of a century, and during that time accumulated a large fortune, leaving an estate worth nearly $5,000. He was an honorable and industrious citizen, and was courteous to all with whom he had dealings. He dealt fairly and honorably with everyone, and was highly esteemed and respected by everybody. He made a will several weeks since and appointed W.C. TOWLE as executor to administrator on his Estate. The funeral will take place this morning, at 10 oclock, from the family residence.
The subject of this notice has been in ill health for a long time, and has suffered much during the last year. He bore his sufferings cheerfully, and at 4 o'clock on yesterday morning, his spirit took its flight to that better world. The deceased was born in Delaware in 1815, and consequently was 65 years of age. He moved to this county in 1837, and was a prominent and honored citizen. He was once elected to the State Legislature and gave entire satisfaction to his constituents. AQUILLA NEBEKER was a man who had many warm friends, and all will regret very much to hear of his death. He was a genial soul, always lively and ready to relate a pleasing anecdote to a crowd. He was kind and generous hearted, and would help anyone who came to him in distress. He was a man of liberal views, and always free to express his sentiments on any topic.
Killed by Lightning
Yesterday evening during a thunderstorm, a son of JOHN NELSON, of
Opedee, named ROBERT NELSON, and about 15 years of age, went from the
house to the road, a short distance, to see if his father was coming,
and while standing under a tree was struck by lightning and instantly
killed. The funeral will take place this afternoon.
Cayuga - Mrs. Ura I. Newnum, 77 died at 2:30 a.m. today Monday Feb 3, 1968 in Vermillion Co. Hospital, Clinton where she had been a patient two days. Born Sept 4, 1891, in Ft. Co, she was the daughter of Leroy and Elizabeth Hutts Simmons. She was a member of the Cayuga Nazarene Church. Mrs. Newnum was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Nov 22, 1962 and a sister. Survivors include two daughtesr, Mrs. Oveda Russell of Tangier RR; Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall of Veedersburg; a brother, Arista Simmons of Mellott; a son, Ora of New Richmond; 15 grandchildren and 20 greats. Services will be at the Woodrow Funeral Home Kingman at 2 p.m. Wed. Burial in Centennial Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home 2-4 and 7-9 Tuesday.
DANA - Emily Nickels, 92, of Dana died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006 in Heritage House in Clinton.
She was a retired bank teller with 50 years of service at First National Bank in Dana. She was born Aug. 3, 1914, to John Myers and Mabel Rotroff Myers. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Nickels, whom she married on March 11, 1933 and who died June 28, 1993.
Survivors include, two sons, Kenneth L. Nickels and his wife Marsha of Dana, and Lowell Nickels and his wife Joann of Clinton; one daughter, Loretta Berdsong and her husband Howard of Brownsburg; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and several special nieces and nephews. She was a member of Dana United Methodist Church and a former member of Rebekah Lodge of Dana.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Graham officiating. Burial is in Bono Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, and, and prior to services Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers contributons may be made to Dana United Methodist Church.
DANA - J.D. Nickle, 87, of Dana died at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2006, in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. He was a retired farmer with 68 years of service. He was born April 24, 1918, in Ridge Farm, Ill., to Roy Nickle and Hazel Fortune Nickle.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ruth Gwendolyn Songer Nickle, whom he married Oct. 9, 1938, in Montezuma; one son, Dan Nickle and his wife Bett of Dana; one daughter, Marsha Nickels and her husband Kenneth of Dana; one sister, Helen Nickle of Dana; eight grandchildren, Jay D. "Buster" Nickels, Kevin Nickels, Brian Nickels, Scott Nickels, Chris Nickle, Lori Palmer, Keena Evans and Lory Gill; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Ray Nickle.
He was a 1948 graduate of Newport High School and attended Purdue University. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Eugene, and the Masonic Lodge in Montezuma.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel at Bono Cemetery with burial to follow. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Overpeck-Gooch Funeral Home.
By special correspondent -- Clinton, IN, July 12 - Mrs. LOU VICIE NIECE, 72 years old, died Friday at the home of her son, William Wardle, who lives west of Jackson Hill mine No. 5, southwest of Clinton. Mrs. Niece had been suffering from liver trouble. Surviving are one son and a daughter. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Holiness Chapel, near the Jackson Hill mine. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, near Tecumseh.
On Sunday last at 8 oclock in the morning the spirit of JOSHUA NIXON took its flight to that better world. He was sick just 53 days, a greater portion of which time he was not in his right mind and could not recognize his most intimate friends. ROBERT NIXON, of Oswego, Kansas, arrived at the bedside of his dying brother only a couple of hours before he breathed his last. Mr. NIXON was born in Ohio in 1813, and moved to Newport in 1828, he then being only 15 years of age. He resided here up to the time of his decease, and was respected by everyone as an honorable, upright citizen. He had but few enemies, if any. He had been a true and accepted member of the M.E. Church for the last 20 years. The funeral took place last Monday afternoon, at his late residence, Rev. W.A. SMITH, of Shawnee, Tippecanoe County, officiating. After services the remains were followed by the relatives and a large concourse of friends to the Thomas Cemetery, where the inanimate clay was lowered into the silent grave, there to await the morn of the resurrection.
Uncle ROBERT NIXON, of Oswego, KS, who moved from here in 1872, died at 5 o'clock on last Saturday morning, January 11, 1890, aged nearly 86 years. The deceased was born in Cork, Ireland, on February 29, 1804, and emigrated to Manchester, OH, in 1814. He moved here in 1839, coming from Cincinnati in a small flat boat. There are a number of houses still standing in this city that were constructed by him. He was a fine mechanic, and always did honest work. He has been a member of the M.E. Church for many years. His funeral took place at Oswego, KS, at 2 p.m. on Monday last. He leaves an estate valued at forty or fifty thousand dollars, which will probably go to his nephew, ROBERT H. NIXON of this place, as he leaves no children.
Veedersburg - Vernon Noggle, 70 of Rt 3, Veedersburg died Tuesday in his home here. He was a member of the Sterling Christian Church and Veedersburg F&AM. He was born in Vermillion County June 13, 1907, a son of Freeman and Kate Jones Noggle. He married Myrtle Brown May 11, 1929 at Sterling. Surviving are his wife, a son, Roderick of Rt 4, Veedersburg, a daughter, Mrs. James (Donna) Furr of LaCrosse, Wis; a brother, Virgil of Oakland, Calif; two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Marie) Conrad, Crawfordsville and Mrs. Ray (Florence) Holton of Greencastle and four grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Parham Funeral Home here with Rev. Richard Throckmorton officiating. Burial in Rockfield Cemetery. friends may call at the funeral home. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8:30 tonight.
The death angel came to the home of MADISON and MINERVA NOLAN, of St. Bernice, on the morning of the 29th instant, and claimed VACHEL NOLAN, their only boy. For 10 short summers he made sunshine on earth, then went home to bask in the light of God. He exhibited a precocity of thoughtfulness beyond his years, and his love for the good, the beautiful and the true endeared him to all, and his obedience and kindness made him the special favorite of his parents. To God they gave him with tears. They knew him by one name, the angels by another. His last illness occupied nearly one month of intense suffering, but it is past. The weary nights of watching and pains are gone. His remains are resting in the Clinton Cemetery.
Tangier - Mrs. Martha Norman, age 91, a resident of Tangier, died Friday morning, July 5, at the Vermillion County Hospital, Clinton, where she had been a patient since June 17. Mrs. Norman was born May 27, 1877 at Dana, the daughter of Henry and Sandra Jane Huffman Harvey. She married Oscar Hamilton Norman, who preceded her in death March 1, 1947. She attended the Fairview EUB Church near Tangier. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Beulah) Cole of Lafayette; two sons, Ward of Tangier and Morris of New Market; 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceed in death by one daughter, one son, one brother and one sister. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Woodrow Funeral Home in Kingman, Rev. Leon Korb officiated and burial was in West Union Cemetery near Montezuma.
LENA C. NYE, a 4 year old daughter of Rev. J.W. NYE, of Vermillion, Edgar County, IL, and formerly a resident of Perrysville, died on the 2nd of this month, after an illness of four months.
