Dalton Cemetery

Road SignGo west from town of Universal on County Road W1800S to S200W. Turn North on S200W at Operating Engineers training site. Turn NW on S250W and go about 600 yards to a gravel trail. Location: N39 deg 37.952', W87 deg 30.369'

The trail goes next to a small lake to the top of a steep hill. The Cemetery is in the woods. There are Lindsey, and Tweedy stones from the 1850's to late 1800's located in the cemetery.

One large stone Listing Michael Dolton and wife Susan R. along with five infant children is located at the back of the lot. I believe the Dolton (Dalton) stone was probably placed there when the coal company purchased the Dalton farm in the 1940's and moved the Dalton family remains to the site. I don't know where the Dalton farm was exactly, but it was probably nearby. My grandfather's story is that they used to dig some coal and sell it locally for some cash. Grandpa James Francis Dalton left for California in about 1886 at age 16 after his father Michael died in 1882.

I visited the cemetery site in June 2009,
