The subject of this biographical sketch is one of our most promising young men. He was born of poor but honest parentage in the city of Cork, Ireland, and having emigrated to this country at an early age, he has lost much of that rich brogue which is such a distinguished feature among the sons of Erin. John is descended from a long line of ancient Irish Kings, and in person possessed of that courtly style, and princely grace of carriage which was always remarkable among the sovereigns of the Emerald Isle. He has inherited great wealth from his kinsman and uncle, Sir Patrick O'Toole. The proud distinction of having owned those pugnacious specimens of telltale beauty mentioned in the beautiful legends of his country, as "the Kilkenny cats," belongs to his family alone. He early turned his attention to the investigation of moral science, political economy, and antiquarian research. He mastered Birds of America before he had reached his 34th year, and his great work written by himself entitled "The Canary, its different varieties and value as an ornamental bird," has been elevated to the dignity of a text book. It is said that John kissed the "blarney stone", ere he set sail from his native land. Owing to a peculiar and somewhat strange aversion to female society, he never married, and in person is the finest specimen of bachelorhood on the Wabash.
