Mr. Gilgis was born 28 Sept 1827 in Lewis Co,. Ky., died 4 Feb 1874 in Indianola, IL.
Oct 24, 1849 he married Miss Matilda McFarland, daughter of Arthur and Jane (Claypool) McFarland of Greene Co., Ohio. He had 5 children: John E., Phileous S., Lester J., Stanton L., and Carrie. Three died when small, Mary, William and Benjamin.
He had a large farm near Indianola, also a hotel which he had just put into running order when he died at a early age.
Mr. Gilgis father, John Gilgis, was a soldier in war of 1812. He married Mrs. Sarah Whisaker, formerly Miss Beard. She died in Ky, while on a visit and he in Vermillion County. Mrs. Gilgis' father also was in War of 1812, and her grandfather, Joseph McFarland, was a Continental Soldier during the Revolutionary War.
