ROBERT DAVIS was born in Montgomery Co., VA, on January 29, 1810, and had he lived till the 29th of next month, he would have been 81 years of age. His parents, JOHN and MARY DAVIS, were also natives of Virginia. His great-grandfather, JERRY DAVIS, came from Wales, England, and was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His wife, MELVINA TAYLOR, was born at Christiansburg, VA, on January 18, 1818, and survives him. They were united in wedlock at the residence of the bride's sister, in Montgomery Co., VA, January 19, 1836. They lived in Virginia nearly 3 years after their marriage, during which time Mr. DAVIS worked at his trade – brick laying and plastering. Thinking they could better their condition in the great west, they packed the few personal effects they then possessed into a little one-horse wagon, and tearing themselves away from the dear old home of their childhood and endearing attachments, and happy associations of life in the big mountains of that state, pushed out into the wilderness of the west, enduring the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life. The first point they reached at which they stopped for any considerable period of time, was Waveland, IN, in 1839. Here they lived about 4-1/2 years, purchasing a lot in this place and erecting a little house thereon. From Waveland, they moved to Annapolis, Parke County, where their son, S.B. DAVIS, was born on June 3, 1842. They again moved back to Waveland, where they remained a short time, and then moved on a farm about 4 or 5 miles west of that town. Here father followed the occupation of farming, and also worked at his trade. Here he remained 8-1/2 years, and by hard labor and frugality succeeded in accumulating something of this world's goods. From here he moved to Helt's Prairie, Vermillion Co., in February 1855, where he purchased a farm and spent the remainder of his days. Four years ago, on January 19, they celebrated their golden wedding. Both were members of the M.E. Church, father having united with the church at the age of 30, and mother at the age of 12.
