"Guy H. Briggs was born Oct. 9, 1874 in Vigo County and received an education in grade school and on the farm. On Dec. 15, 1895, he married Thursa Reeder. Thursa was the daughter of J.W. and Elizabeth Smith Reeder and was born on Oct. 7, 1872. Thursa was first married to Bert Wright and they had one Daughter, Mary Wright Louden. Bert Wright died at age 20.
"Guy Briggs started out as a small farmer, but was extremely successful, eventually expanding his holdings to over 3,000 acres in Vigo County, as well as 170 acres in Clinton Township and 135 acres in Eugene Township in Vermillion County. Mr. Briggs was in the real estate business and plotted and built Shepherdsville. Guy was Supt. of Sunday School at Trinity Church. He was also elected Fayette Township Trustee, which made all of this more interesting, because his education was in grade school. He conducted the 1908 Fayette Township High School Commencement.
"Mr. Briggs went into the construction business and built part of Hwy. 41 to Rockville, as well as part of 163 to Centenary, In. Later, Mr. Briggs moved to Clinton where he was in the insurance and real estate business. After moving to Clinton, Guy became very active in civic affairs including being a committee member of the building of the First United Methodist Church at 4th and Blackman. He built the coliseum so that the schools would have a place to play basketball. During W.W. I, he organized the Liberty Guard, as his daughter has a certificate from Gov. Goodrich so stating. During W.W. II he was director of the Vermillion County ration board.
"Guy and Thursa were the parents of two children, Herbert Ray, an Indianapolis lawyer, and Ruth Marie Briggs Gerrish.
"Mr. Briggs was a jovial and entertaining companion socially, and held affiliations with the Elk, Moose, Lions, Mystic Shriner, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows, Half Century Club, Redmen, Modern Woodmen and Knights Templers. He was also a 32 degree Mason."
