MCGRUDER, NORMAN B.
Pension  W.9542,  Switzerland Co. Indiana

The date and place of birth and names of parents of Norman Bruce McGruder are not shown.

While a resident of Georgetown, now District of Columbia, Norman Bruce McGruder enlisted in 1781 and served as a private in Captain George Bell's company, Colonel William Murdock's and William Dickey's Maryland Regiments: length of service more than six months.

He lived in Washington County, tha part which was later called Allegney County, Maryland, for thirty-one years, and about 1814 moved to Switzerland County, Indiana.

He died February 16, 1836, in Switzerland Co. Indiana. Soldier married December 25, 1783 in Washington Co. Maryland, Nancy Paugh, who was born in Allegheny County, Maryland. She was the daughter of Michael Paugh.  Name of her mother is not shown.

Soldier's widow, Nancy McGruder, was allowed pension on her application executed Jan. 1, 1845, at which time she was residing in Louisville, Jefferson Co. Ky. with her grand daughter, her name not designated. Various statements were made in regard to Nancy McGruder's age -- that she was born in 1777, that she was aged 69 years in 1836; aged 68 years in 1845; and aged 75 in 1845.

Norman Bruce McGruder & Nancy had three children;  Mary or Polly, born Dec. 30, 1784;  James born Feb. 12, 1786; and Sarah or Sally, born May 2, 1789.  Said Mary and James died prior to 18?4.  Sarah married, date and place not stated Amos Gilbert, his age not given. They were both died in 1845, dates and places of death not stated.

In 1844 Amity MacMillen and Elijah Gilbert, grandchildren of soldier and Nancy McGruder, were living in Switz. Co. Ind. their ages or names of their parents were not designated.

In 1845, a son, nine years old, of a grand daughter of Nancy McGruder soldier;s widow, was referred to, no names were designated.

In 1845, Isaac Paugh, a half brother of soldier's widow, Nancy, was living in Ripley Co. Ind. age not given. There are no futher family data.

Nov. 1836 Nancy McGruder, age 69, widow of Norman B. McGruder, Rev. soldier on pension rolls,  Cert. 2216. was married at Ft. Cumberland, Maryland,  Dec. 25, 1751.  He died Feb. 16, 1836.  Signed by John Pavy and Amos Gilbert.

MOORE, RODERICK
Pension W.9578

Roderick Moore of Connecticut, received a pension in Switzerland county, Indiana, in 1831

He was born February 9, 1761 in Salidbury, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Names of parents not stated.

While residing in Salisbury, Conn. Roderick Moore enlisted some time in June or July, 1777, and served as a private six months in Captain Roger's company,  Colonel Eno's Connecticut regiment.  He enlisted some time in July or August, 1773, served two months in Captain Roger Moore's Connecticut company: it was not stated that he was related to soldier.

Roderick Moore continued to live in Connecticut for about three years after the Revolution, then moved to New York, where he lived about twenty-five years, then to Ohio, lived about three years, thence to Indiana.

He was allowed pension on his application executed September 17, 1832, at which time he was a resident of Switzerland Co. Indiana.

Roderick Moore married June 16, 1841, in Switzerland Co. Ind.  His widow Mary Moore, was allowed pension on her application executed Nov. 11, 1841. at which time she was living in Jefferson two. Switzerland Co. Ind.  She was still living in Switzerland Co. in 1849.

MOUNTS, THOMAS
Pension  S.17594

Thomas Mounts was born July 8, 1764, near Fort Cumberland, state not given.  Names of parents are not shown.

While living in Westmoreland Co. Pennsylvania, Thomas Mounts enlisted in Captain John Mentor's company under Colonel Providence Mounts or Mountz (no relationship shown) in the Pennsylvania troops;  Marched from  Mounts' Mill to Pittsburgh, where they joined General McIntosh's command, and went against the Delaware & Shawnee Indianas on Big Beaver Creek; soldier  stated that he was in one engagement with the savages;  length of this tour not shown:  he enlisted in 1779 or 1780, served as a private under Lieutenant Lewis Flemming & Colonel Caleb Mounts (no relationship shown) in the Pennsylvania troops & acted as a guard over some military stores at Caleb Mounts' mill; length of this tour, three months;  he enlisted in 1780 or 1781, and served three months as a private in Captain James Wallace's Pennsylvania company and in 1781 or 1782, served another tour of three months under same captain; on both these tours, he was stationed at Wallace's Fort in Ligonier Valley.

Soldier stated that he resided twenty-seven years in Pennsylvania, fifteen years in Kentucky, after which he moved to Indiana, where he had resided twenty six years when he was allowed pension on his application executed September 18, 1832, while residing in Switzerland County, Indiana.

There are no data as to wife and children.

In order to obtain date of last payment of pension, the name & address of person paid and possibly date of death of pensioner, you shoud address The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Divison, Washington D. C. and cite the following:
"Thomas Mounts, Certificate No. 7559, issued Apr. 26, 1833, rate $40 per annum, commenced Mar. 4, 1831, Act. of June 7, 1832, Indiana Agency."

Indianapolis Star,  June 12, 1932:
     Thomas Mounts, wife, 2 sons & 6 dau came to Indiana 1806; settled on banks of the Ohio, mouth of Grants Creek, NE 28-3-1,  Switzerland Co. where he lived the rest of his life and he and his wife are buried there.  Farm now the property of Mrs. James Humphrey. Thomas Mounts born near Ft. Cumblerland, Pa. July 8, 1764, enlisted at age of 15 in company of Pa. Militia; served 3 mo. again enlisted under Capt. John Menton, Pa. Mil. served 3 mo. 1781, three months more in 1782 under Capt. James Wallace in Westmoreland Co.  Wife Nancy Crawford, oldest dau. of Col. Wm. Crawford, who was burned at the stake in Ohio by Indians.  The 6 dau. married:  Henry Wallack,  William Scott, John Lampton of Switz. Co. and Isaac Paugh,  A. G. Hunter & Alex Liggett of Ripley Co.  Family Bible:  Thomas Mounts,  b July 8, 1764;  d July 8, 1842.  Nancy Crawford Mounts,  b  Dec. 27, 1767;   d  Feb. 22, 1842.

From William James (Bill) Wilson a descendant of Thomas Mounts.--"Thomas and Nancy Mounts are my 4th great grandparents.  They are the maternal grandparents of Mahala Scott, born 15 August 1813 in Swit. County, second child (and second daughter) of William and Rachel Scott, who were pioneers in Swit. County.  Mahala married John Wilson, on 2 April 1835 in Swit. County.  They are listed on next line after Thomas and Nancy Mounts (first line at top of page 320), in the 1840 census.  They had 3 (or possibly 4) children in Swit. County, then moved to Holt County, Missouri.  In 1851 they left Missouri and settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, with their 10 children (the 10th being 1 year old James Thomas Wilson, my great grandfather), and had 3 more in Oregon."

NIGHSWONGER, SOLOMON

Switzerland Co.  Probably died in 1820's. married Jemima _______.  Children possibly sons, Solomon and Joh?.  Widow's pension appli. supported by affidavits signed by William Fancher & Joseph Bosea.  Solomon Nighswonger entered the SE 1/2
of Sec. 32-2-2 on July 20, 1815;  later relinquished it and it was reentered by Isaac Watts, the W 1/2 of Sec. 36-3-3 on Jan. 26, 1814. (It may be that these entries were made by son Solomon. 1820 census of Switz. Co. has a John Nighswonger and 1830 a Solomon.

Born about 1752.  Enlisted at Annapolis under Capt. Henry Saitor,  Col. Stone.  Discharged near Philadelphia.  In battles of White Plains and Trenton.  Auditors Office,  Annapolis, shows he enlisted as private in Md. Regiment,  Dec. 10, 1776.  Discharged  Nov. 14, 1780.  Received $136.60 from John Hamilton, Agent Md. Line for pay from August 1, 1780 to Jan. 1, 1782.  Also $69.70 from Jan. 1, 1782 to Jan. 1, 1783.

Died Dec. 1824  Buried on his farm now owned by Charles Haskell.

PROTZMAN, JOHN
Indpls Star,  May 18, 1930

John Protzman came to America from Germany, 1740:  died in Pennsylvania, 1788:  lived in N. J. several years, where his sons were born   John, Jr.  July 10, 1763 and Jacob,  July 4, 1776.  John, Jr. hauled supplies to Washington's army with oxen when only 15 years old;  his father was a soldier in the army.  John, Jr. married Nancy Barbary Rickner, 1790;  moved to Ky. that year, and to Ohio, 1802, and to Switz. County, Ind. 1813.

Their children were;  David B.  b 1791;  John  b 1793;  Elizabeth  b  1795;  Samuel  b  1797;  Nancy  b  1799;  William  b  1801.

Nancy Barbary Richner  was born 1765, the dau. of Daniel or David Richner; both served in the 5th Pa. Regiment, enlisting from Allentown, Northampton Co.  1778-1783.

Service under Capt. Henry Alshouse, Col. Roup.  Received pay from 1778 to 1783.

RENNO, GEORGE

Uncertain.  He may not have died in Indiana, though he did apply for pension here.

A Presley Renno entered the E 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 2 of twp. 3 E., Range 3 ? of the 1st P.M. on 2/26/1818, and a Presley ? Reno, the NW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of sec. 28, in twp 4 N Range 3 W of 1st. P.M. on 2/10/1837.

RICKETTS, NATHAN
Pension record  S.32480.

Nathan Ricketts was born August 26, 1759 or 1760, at Antietam, Maryland.  Names of parents not shown.

While residing in the state of Pennsylvania, on the frontier, in Cumberland County,  Nathan Ricketts enlisted and served as a private with the Pennsylvania troops, as follows;  from sometime in 1779, three months in Captain Alexander McCormick's Company, and was stationed in the mountains on an "Indian trace"; in 1780, three months in Captains James Johnson's and John Thornton's Companies, Colonel Piper's Regiment, and was stationed at the lead mines in Sinking Valley; soldier stated that Edward Ricketts and Thomas Ricketts were Captains in command at Frankstown and the lead mines but did not give any relationship;  in 1781 and 1782, Nathan Ricketts served on tours, at least fourteen months in all under Captains David Caldwell, John Beaty, and Edward Ricketts;  he stated that he served, also at different times, on tours of from two to twenty days each, at least, eight months in all, names of officers not given.

After the Revolution, he resided in Pennsylvania for thirty years, then moved to Kentucky and lived nine years, thence to Indiana.

He was allowed pension on his application executed September 17, 1832, while residing in Dearborn County, Indiana.  Said application was made in Switzerland County, Indiana.

It is not stated that Nathan Ricketts was ever married.

Soldier stated that his nephew served with him but did not give name of soldier;  in 1832 one Robert Ricketts made affidavit in Switzerland County, Indiana that he served with said Nathan Ricketts for three months in 1780, but gave no relationship.

ROBERTS, LT. JOHN
Pension record  S.16239

Lt. John Roberts died Switzerland County, Indiana August 6, 1837.  He was born in Morris County, New Jersey, March, 1753. While residing there, he enlisted in the New Jersey troops in 1776, eight months as sergeant in Captain Seeley's company, Colonel Martim's Regiment.  Service being in three tours, five months and two months, during the 2d tour he was in the battle of Long Island, in the retreat to New York, and the battle of White Plains;  in 1777 he was commissioned Lieutenant, his commission signed by the Governor of New Jersey.  He served two months as such officer, one month stationed at Haddonfield, name of Captain not shown;  one month under Captain Lindsley, during which tour he marched to New Windsor on the North River;  in 1778 or 79 he served three months as Lieut. one month in command of Morris Co. New Jersey troops; one month under Captain Brown and one month under Colonel Seeley.  In 1780 he served as Lieut. in command of a company stationed at Newark, time not given; another tour in command of company under Col. Seeley, on an alarm to protect the town of Springfield; length of this tour not shown.

After Revolution he resided in Kentucky for about 15 years, then moved to Indiana; was allowed pension on his application executed August 17, 1832, while residing in Switzerland County, Indiana.

There is no data as to soldier's family

In the matter of proof the death of John Roberts, Revolutionary Soldier, a Sergeant and Lieutenant, comes Mary Roberts, and produces the court satisfactory testimony that she is the widow of John Roberts, late Rev. War pensioner, under Act of Congress, Jan. 7, 1832.  John Roberts died Craig twp.  Aug. 6, 1837.  John & Mary were married at Williamsburg, Ohio, March 18, 1814.  Witness present.  Pension certificate No.2557, date Nov. 24, 1832.

Feb. term 1838:
Mary Roberts, widow of John Roberts, a lunatic, incapable of managing property.  John Protzman, Jr. appointed guardian.

Militia.  1779 orderly-sergeant in co. commanded by Capt. Worthen, Col Mooney N. H. Militia.  1780 orderly-sergeant in co commanded by Capt. Gordon as Lieut. on board ship,  "Buccanier,"

SCUDDER, ABNER
Switzerland Co. Indiana.  Pension record.

Born June 17, 1784 in Essex Co. N. J.  While residing in Roman Co. N. C. he enlisted in May 1781 and served one year as a private in Capt. Alexander Brevard's company, Cols.  Dickson's (Dickerson) and Blount's  N. C. regiments, was in battle of Eutaw Springs, where he was slightly wounded by a gun shot.  Left service April 18, 1782.

Buried Bethel cemetery in York township.  A stone.

Married Katherine________.  Children;  William 1793 - 1872, in War of 1812  m  Kate Cox

SHUPE, JOHN

Switzerland County,  Indiana

John Shupe was born April 15, 1764, in Bucks Co. Pennsylvania: names of parents not given.

While a resident of Bucks Co. he enlisted in 1776 or 1777 and served eight months as private in Captain John Jameson's Company in Colonel Keichline's or S. Dean's Pennsylvania regiment.

After the Revolution he lived about 40 years in Pennsylvania, one year in Ohio, at Cincinnati, and the remainder of the time in Indiana.

He was allowed pension on his application executed August 16, 1832, at which time he was living in Switzerland County, Indiana.

There are no data relative to the family of John Shupe.

Roster says he died Feb. 24, 1833, probably buried in Vevay cemtery.



SMYTH,  PHILIP D.
Switzerland County

Enlisted for 3 years,  Aug. 13, 1776 in Hagerstown, Maryland, under Capt. William Hirer,  Regt. of Col. Hooicker, Col Sticker, Major Wiltner,  Maryland Line,  attached to Gen. Mechlinberg's Brigade, Continental Establishment.  Volunteered for 2 or 3 months tour under Gen. Sullivan to go up Susquehannah River.  In battles of Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown and Monmouth.

See Switzerland County Cour -- Order bk. D pg. 627,  Declaration made Oct. 5, 1825.  His wife was 75 years old.

Born about 1752.  Enlisted at Romney, Virginia, 1777.  Served in Capt. William Vause's company, Col. James Wood's 12th Virginia Regiment.  In battles of Brandywine and Monmouth.  Wounded.  Served 6 years and 2 months.  Discharged at Winchester, Va. by Col. Neville.

Buried probably at Allensville, Cotton twp.

TODD, JOSEPH

Pension record.  Is listed in Roster of Indiana soldiers of the Revolution but later information says he did not serve in that war. See Vevay Reveille, Sept. 28, 1938.

He died in 1834.  Buried in Long Run cemetery.  Stone.

2d wife, Villa McPherson.  Children: Jesse;  Adaline;  and Catherine.

Died  March 7, 1832,  Probably buried in Jefferson twp.

Enlisted in July, the year Major Andre was hanged (1780) at Johnstown on the Mohawk River,  N. Y. in Capt. Norton's company, 4th N. Y. Regt.  Capt. Smith, Col. Wisenfelt's Regt.  Continental Establishment.  Discharged at Albany, N.Y. Enlisted again in May for 9 months, in Dutchess Co. N. Y.

WITTAKER, JOHN
Pension   S.36845

The data which follow are obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension Claim,  S.36845, based upon the military service in that war of John Whittaker.

The date and place of birth and the names of the parents of John Whittaker are not shown.

John Whittaker enlisted in the state of Virginia, in December, 1776, served as a private in Captain George McCormick's Company, Colonel John Gibson's Virginia Regiment;  Length of service three years.

He was allowed pension on his application executed June 23, 1818, at which time he was a resident of Ross Township, Switzerland Co. Indiana.  He gave his age at that time as about fifty-eight years.

In 1820, soldier stated that he was aged about sixty-two years, & that his family then residing with him consisted of his wife, Martha, aged sixty-three years, and a grand-daughter Maria Whittaker, aged two years.  He gave no further data in regard to his wife, nor do the names of the parents of the grand-daughter appear nor are the names of any children given.

The soldier died September 12, 1825, place not shown.

According to Roster of Rev. Soldiers, John Whittaker is buried at Benham, Indiana.  Name on bronze tablet in Versailles Court House.



WILSON, MICHAEL

Born about 1757, probably Virginia.

Service;  enlisted at Romney,  Hampshire Co. Va. in 1777, as private in Capt. William Voss's company, Col. Wood's Virginia Regt. in battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Stoney Point. Discharged 1780 by Col. Fegeger.  Served three years.

Died 1824;  estate settled in Switzerland Co.  Buried Vevay,  Ind.

WOOLCOTT, JOSEPH

Born July 27, 1764, Newington, Conn (pension appl.) or July 27, 1760  Stuben Co. N. Y. (see below);  son of August Woolcott.

Pension application May 17, 1833, age 68 yrs. Switzerland Co. Ind. and May 16, 1836, age about 74, Switz. Co. Ind.  After War continued to live in Rennsselaer Co. N. Y. for many years.  Affidavit, Jan. 30, 1834 of Charles Woolcott, age 66 and of Norman Woolcott, age 68 yrs. that they are brothers of Joseph;  that they now (I think) live in Rensselaer Co. N. Y.;  that soldier made his home at their father's house in Rensselaer Co. N. Y.;  that soldier is 6 yrs. older than Norman, and 8 yrs older than Charles; that soldier served as a substitute for father Augustus Woolcott, who had been called out for 9 months; Joseph substituted 6 months and father served the balance.  At enlistment lived Stephentown, Albany Co. N. Y. there for about 29 yrs.; to Kentucky, then to Indiana.
