The Switzerland County Pioneer Association met at the Court house.
There
being neither President or Vice President in attendance, Solomon
Washer was appointed President
Pro Tem. It was suggested that the President Hon. John Dumont has
departed this life causing
a vacancy in the office of President and that one of the Directors
Willams has also departed
this life causing a vacancy of Director.

In the above list we have the names of 112 persons who
have reached the
age of 70 years and upwards
all residents of these two counties. During the past week we have heard
that three of the number
have been borne to their final resting place; namely, John Lathom of
Rising Sun; Maria Melick
of East Enterprize and Martin R. Green of Patriot. We find the study of
this list of names quite
interesting. Posey Township, Switzerland County furnished one fourth of
the whole number. It
would seem that the early settlers in that region maintained a fixed
determination to hold the fort. On the list we find no less than twenty
one-States and countries represented. To the early settlement of this
part of
Indiana, New York and Kentucky contributed most largely; Ohio and
Pennsylvania came next in rank,
while from the "down East" there are comparatively few and yet fewer
from the far South while
the West is a blank it then being and unsettled region.
