In deed book E., page 391-393, in the Switzerland County, court house is a deed from James Alfrey (Jr.) and Nancy his wife to the Trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church, for land containing one and one half acres, to be used to erect a house or place of worship. It is dated February 19, 1833. It appears from church records that a church had already been built across the road in 1831. In 1841 a new church was built and on October 17, 1849 the Alfrey's also deeded this land to the church. The present church was built in 1901, the one and one half acres is used as the cemetery. They are both named after the first local preacher, or "exorter", Ebenezer Gray.

On the third side of the above sandstone monument it says "erected by George Anshutz for the use of his family".  At the top of the stone is a very long verse which ends with:  "Farwell; farwell - Senior class of 1856 I.A. University". - this was their farwell to Phillip C. Anshutz. A second stone has the inscription "Sacred to the memory of the sons and daughters of George & Elizabeth Anshutz"  Listed on three sides of the stone are.
