Biography

Gabriel Johnson

When Gabriel Johnson was born in 1773 in Scott, Kentucky, his father, William Johnson, was 30 and his mother, Lucy Hackley, was 30. He had two sons and ten daughters with Elizabeth Sebree. He then married Elizabeth Dolloff/Doliff on October 6, 1846. He died on September 1, 1852, in Vevay, Indiana, having lived a long life of 79 years.

In the 1810 census Gabriel and his family were living in Scott Co. KY. By 1820 through 1850 he was living in Switzerland County, Indiana, and in 1850 is shown as a farmer and his second wife, Elizabeth, was living with him along with her daughter-in-law, Lucy Adams (19) and Lucy Adam's son, Lewis Adams (1) and a Cosby Lewis (farmer).

Gabriel Johnson ran a store. He lived in Bennington, Switzerland County, Indiana, and was blind before he died. He was married the second time to Widow Adams (6 October 1846), mother of A. C. Adams. {[From notes of Ann Stage's father, Source: WFT, Vol 3, #0857.] Gabriel Johnson's Will was written 12 Jan 1850 and probated 17 Sep 1852 in Jefferson Township, Switzerland County. Ira Malin (Grandson) was listed as the clerk, Witnesses were Larkin Roberts, S. Graham, and Edward Roberts was his Executor.

"I further direct that my wife Elizabeth keep my real estate during her natural lifetime, and at her death to be conveyed to my grandson Gabriel Johnson son of Richard and Francis Johnson of Decator County Indiana, I also direct that of my personal property my wife is to have one milch cow two bedsteads, two beds and bedding, one set of chairs all of her own choice, the desk, safe, stove and utensils, cupboard and cupboard ware, clock and looking glass, and kitchen furniture, I further direct that my wife have one hundred dollars after deceased. I also direct that my daughter Sarah Lepper have fifty dollars over and above her equal share with the rest of my children, I also direct that all my personal property which may be left be disposed of in proper manner and divided equally amongst all my children except Esther Twinham and Elen Orem which I only intend shall have one dollar each..."

Will Gabriel was also a Baptist Deacon. A Gabriel Johnson was listed in the 1800-1810 Scott County, Kentucky census - not listed in 1790 Kentucky census. It is possible that Robert Johnson (also of Scott Co. KY) was the grandfather of Gabriel - Robert had a son named William (Gabriel's father?). There was also a half brother of William's, Cave Johnson, and quite a bit of information about him seems to be available. Gabriel Johnson married Elizabeth Adams 6 Oct 1846, Switzerland County, Indiana. (Note: His first wife, Elizabeth (Sebree) would have been deceased by Oct 1846) WFT lists his wife as Adams and his will mentions his wife Elizabeth. Elizabeth (Dolloff/Doliff) Adams married Gabriel Johnson on 6 Oct 1846 in Switzerland County, Indiana. In the 1850 census she was listed as 65 years of age, born in New Hampshire. Also listed in that census for the Gabriel Johnson household was Lucy (Cole) Adams, age 19, and her son Lewis J Adams, age 1. Since Lucy's husband, Thomas Frederick Adams was at sea much of the time Lucy was either visiting, or living with her Mother-in-law at the time of the 1850 census. Betsy's first husband, Thomas Adams, died 10 June 1827 in Limerick, Maine, which would have been after Lucy (Johnson) Dalmazzo was born (11 Dec 1797). In Dufore's History of Switzerland County, he mentions a Robert M. Trotter as a relative of Gabriel Johnson. Trotter had a house on Main Street in Vevay.
