Morris G. Zink

SOUTH BEND - Morris Gilbert Zink, 84, of South Bend, died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, in Our Lady of Peace Hospital, Mishawaka, IN, following a brief illness. Mr. Zink was born September 8, 1925, in Argos, IN, to the late Don and Fern (Bennett) Zink, and had lived in South Bend since 1952, coming from Plymouth, IN. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Francis and Audrey Zink. On February 22, 1948, in Argos, he married Ercell Umbaugh, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Dee Dee Zink (Robert Becnel) of New Orleans, LA; four step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and his two favorite buddies, Duke and Taffy, his adopted cats. Morris retired as the owner of Elkhart Office Machines, Inc. More recently he worked part-time as a water tester for Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was proud to be an usher in the Notre Dame Stadium and most recently served as an assistant supervisor in the press box. He was formerly a member and past president of the South Bend Lions Club and a former member of Elks Lodge #425 of Elkhart and St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee. He was currently an active member of First United Methodist Church, South Bend, where he served as an usher and trustee among many activities. He loved to water ski and was very mechanically oriented, to the extent of building his own boat, as well as refurbishing three Triumph Spitfires. He was an all-around athlete and participated for many years in basketball and softball leagues in the area. He had also gotten involved in the local Special Olympics competition as a volunteer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 11th, in First United Methodist Church, South Bend, with Rev. Mary Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth. The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. today, May 10th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
