Rose Zappia, 94, of North Division Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 2:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.
Rose was born on June 1, 1908, in Plati, Italy, to the late Anthony and Mary (DeMark) Fotia. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Saldana on Dec. 4, 1980; a sister, Frances Perri; and by three brothers, Dominic, Frank and Joseph Fotia.
In 1912, at the age of 4, Rose came from Italy to the United States. On Sept. 23, 1923, in St. Monica Church in Mishawaka, Rose married Frank Zappia, who also preceded her in death on March 27, 1956.
Rose is survived by two daughters, Mary (Joseph) Catanzarite and Pam (Sherman) Deal, both of Mishawaka; six sons, Dominic Zappia of Anaheim, Calif., Anthony Zappia, Joseph Zappia, Patrick (Kay) Zappia, Rocco (Sara) and Frank (Thelma) Zappia Jr., all of Mishawaka; a son-in-law, Joseph Saldana of Colton, Calif.; 21 grandchildren, Frank Rocco Zappia of Mishawaka, Chris Zappia of Washington, D.C., Patrick Zappia Jr. of Florida, Donald Deal of Manhattan, N.Y., Mary Yzaguierrie of Colton, Calif., Rocco Zappia Jr. of Osceola, Ind., Sara Marie Zappia of Osceola, Ross Deal of Mishawaka, Anthony Zappia of Mishawaka, Roseann (Richard) Rossano of Colton, Calif., Parry (Jim) Arazia of Colton, Calif., Toni (Ray) Martinez of Colton, Calif., Roseanne (Mark) Imus of Osceola, Tony (Delores) Catanzarite of South Bend, Frank (Jill) Catanzarite of Sidney, Ohio, Patrick (Nancy) Catanzarite of South Bend, Debbie (Rodger) Powell of Mishawaka, Frank Zappia (Sally) III of Mishawaka, Rosemarie (Regis) Thimons of Mishawaka, Joseph (Andrea) Zappia of Mishawaka and Cheryl (Douglas) Birkey of Granger, Ind.; 45 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Wullaert of Mishawaka; two sisters-in-law, Betty Fotia of Mishawaka and Cathy Fotia of South Bend; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Rose was a lifelong member of St. Monica Parish in Mishawaka and the Rosary Society at the church. During her working days she was a "spooler" at the former Ball Band (Uniroyal) in Mishawaka.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where a vigil service will be held at 4 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be concelebrated in St. Monica Church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, with Fr. Stoyle, Fr. Miller and Fr. England officiating.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
Contributions may be made in Rose's memory to the St. Monica Parish Building Fund.
