MISHAWAKA - Rev. Robert A. Yast, 85, of Fort Wayne and
formerly of Mishawaka, passed away Sunday morning, October 30,
2011, in the St. Anne Home, Fort Wayne. Robert A. Yast was born
August 10, 1926, in LaPorte, Indiana, a son of the late Charles
and Elizabeth (Richards) Yast. He graduated from LaPorte High
School in 1944. He then served his country in the U.S. Army Air
Corps from 1944 - 1947 and attained the rank of sergeant. It was
during his time in the service that he felt a calling to become a
Catholic priest. His college education included Indiana
University, St. Jerome College in Canada, and he graduated from
Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati in 1956. Father Yast was
ordained to the priesthood on May 26, 1956, and served as a
priest in the Diocese of Ft. Wayne-South Bend from 1956 -
2006. The churches he served were St. Peter Church in Fort Wayne
from 1956 - 1968; St. John the Baptist Church in South Bend from
1968 - 1972; St. Anthony de Padua Church in South Bend from 1972
- 1988; St. Patrick Church in Walkerton from 1988 - 1991; and St.
Joseph Church in Mishawaka from 1991 - 2006. Father Yast
is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by two sisters, Helen Yast and Marjorie Signore; and two
brothers, Joseph Yast and Dr. Charles Yast. Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 am in St. Joseph
Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka. The celebrant
will be The Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop. Graveside
services and burial will take place Thursday at 3 pm in Oaklawn
Cemetery, Sturgis, MI. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 - 4 pm
and 6 - 8 pm in St. Joseph Church. A Rosary will be prayed at 4
pm and a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 pm. Visitation is
also Thursday from 9:30 - 10:45 am in the church. Father Yast
requested no flowers for his funeral. Memorials are suggested to
St. Joseph Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka, IN 46544; or to
Marklund Charities (for disabled adults and children), 1 South
