Sister M. Joan Grandi (Elizabeth Yandl) CSC, 96, was born in South Bend, Ind., to the late George Yandl and Theresa Kramer Yandl. Sister is survived by her nephew, George Yandl of Painesdale, Mich.; and nieces, Beverly Green and Josephine Horwarth, both of South Bend; and by many friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sister M. Teresa, CSC, in 1990.
Sister Joan Grandi received her early education at Saint Mary's School, South Bend, Saint Mary's Academy and Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Ind. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1925, made her first profession in 1927 and final profession in 1930. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Saint Mary's College in 1967. Sister taught elementary grades for 44 years starting in Texas in 1927, 2 years in Illinois and ending in South Bend in 1970. While living at Our Lady of Holy Cross Convent in South Bend, Sister spent 22 years as a tutor at John Marshall School in South Bend. On May 25, 1993, the playground at John Marshall School was dedicated in Sister Joan Grandi's honor for her years of service to the students of John Marshall School. She was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
Reception of the Body and Wake service will be at 9 a.m. Monday, May 24, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 24, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
