Br. Robert Glenn Woodward, CSC, 72, died on Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Dujarie House, the Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, after an illness. Br. Robert was born on Aug. 18, 1928, in Owensboro, Ky., one of three sons and two daughters of the late Herbert G. and Mary (Rudy) Woodward.

He was educated in Catholic elementary and secondary schools in Owensboro before joining Holy Cross in 1949, have begun his college studies at Brescia College in Owensboro in 1947. He completed his year of novitiate training at Rolling Prairie, Ind., on Feb. 2, 1951, and graduated magna cum laude form St. Edward's University, Austin, Texas in 1954, pronouncing his perpetual vows on August 16 of that same year.

Br. Robert was by profession and inclination an accountant, a skill he brought to both classroom and office all of his active life as a religious. His deliberate precision was symbolic of his gentle, patient and good-natured temperament and his devotion to duty. He could be relied upon for meticulously accurate accounts wherever he served. He began his ministry of teaching and of staff support to schools and service organizations at St. Edward's University in Austin upon graduation in 1954. From 1955-59, he served on the staff of St. Edward High School, Lakewood, Ohio, from 1959-63 that of Archbishop Hoban High School, Akron, Ohio, from 1963-69 that of Holy Cross High School, River Grove, Ill.; from 1969-79 once again that of Archbishop Hoban High School, and for the remainder of his active years, from 1973-93, that of the Senior Friendship Centers, Inc., in southwest Florida, first in Fort Meyers, then in Sarasota, and finally in Venice. In 1993 he retired to Casa Santa Cruz in Phoenix, Ariz., residing and assisting there until ill health brought him to Dujarie House at Notre Dame only weeks before his death. He was to have celebrated with the community his 50th anniversary of religious profession on June 16 of this year.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, March 31, at St. Joseph's Chapel, the brothers' Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame, 54515 Indiana 933 N. A Mass of Resurrection will follow at 4 p.m., with burial immediately afterward in St. Joseph's Cemetery on the Village grounds. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
