Edward F. Wood, 71, of Sioux Falls,
S.D., formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away after a long
illness on Saturday, Nov. 16, in his residence.
Mr. Woods was born on Sept. 29, 1931, in
South Bend, to Edward and Margarette Wood. During the Korean War,
in 1951-1954, he served in the Navy as a mechanic and flight
engineer on a Navy bomber. In 1956 he married Mary Lou Godfrey.
After graduating from college he served as a
high school teacher, coach and administrator for 12 years in
Indiana. He also spent two years on the staff of the University
of North Dakota. Ed served as director of the Southeast
Vocation-Technical Institute from 1969-1986, and nine more years
with school developing programs for area businesses and
manufacturers. In 1976 he married Wilma Jean Kooi. In 1998 he was
employed part-time by the Associated General Contractors to work
with the apprentice programs.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Jean of
Sioux Falls; four daughters, Laurie (David) McKee of
Yankton, S.D., Pam (Rick) Hazzard of Boise, Idaho, Paula
(Brett) Bartels of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Penny (Scott) Hanisch
of Hartford, S.D.; two sons, John (Brenda) Wood of Rock Valley,
Iowa, and Pat (Cheri) Wood of Sioux Falls; 15 grandchildren; his
stepfather, Rev. H. Paul Smith of Lakeland, Fla.; a
sister, Alanna M. Chmiel of South Bend; a brother, Dennis
(Joyce) Wood of South Bend; two step-brothers, Carl E. (Carol)
Smith of Gettysburg, Pa., and Richard A. Smith of South Bend; and
by a special brother-in-law, M. Joseph (Nancy) Chmiel of
Mishawaka, Ind.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30
a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in the First Reformed Church, Sioux
Falls. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will
take place in the Heritage Funeral Home, Sioux Falls. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Center of Hope, Faith in Action
at First Reformed Church or Avera McKennan Hospice, all of Sioux
Falls. The Zahoran Funeral Home handled local arrangements.
