John L. ''Jack'' Witter, 72, of
Willow Street, Mishawaka, Ind., died after an illness at 5:45
p.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, in Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation
Center. He was born Jan. 29, 1925, in LaPorte, Ind., and lived
here most of his life. He retired in 1985 from Conrail after 43
years of service as a telegraph operator at H.F. Tower.
John married the former Maxine L. Stanley
in Mishawaka on Sept. 24, 1977, who survives. John is also
survived by two daughters, Connie Marshman of Mishawaka
and Barbara Witter of Michigan; and two sons, John W. Witter of
Mishawaka and James M. Witter of South Bend, Ind.; their mother,
Victoria ''Ryba'' Bechtold of Mishawaka; two
stepdaughters, Linda Young of Mishawaka and Amy J. Marvel
of Mishawaka; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a
sister, Thelma Sweeny of Kansas.
John was a World War II Army veteran,
serving as an infantryman with the 42nd Infantry Rainbow
Division. He was a member of VFW Post 360, Eagles 2083 and Moose
Lodge 1262. His favorite sport was automobile racing, and he
formerly owned a spring car team.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8
p.m. today in Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St.,
Mishawaka, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on
Monday. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka.
