Martha E. Winstead

Martha E. Winstead, 84, of South Bend, Ind., passed away at 1:05 a.m. Monday, July 29, in Regency Place of South Bend. She was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Pulaski, Tenn., to the late Willis E. and Adelaide E. (Birdsong) Winstead.

 

She is survived by a sister, Ruth W. (Robert) Lee of Pulaski; two nieces, Lucy Collins and Martha Lee; a nephew, Robert E. Lee III; and by one great-niece and three great-nephews. Also left to cherish her memory is her longtime companion, Dorit Lust of South Bend.

 

Ms. Winstead retired from the South Bend Medical Foundation as vice president of professional services after 42 years of service. She received her teacher's certificate from Athens College, Athens, Ala. She received her BA from Martin College, Pulaski, Tenn., and her MA from Indiana University. She was an emeritus member of Alpha Mu Tau, the DAR Schylur Colfax Chapter, the American Society of Medical Technologists, and served as president of both the State and National Society 1971-1972. She was also a registered medical technologist A.S.C.P., and a registered blood bank technologist A.A.B.B. In 1970 she received the Professional Lectorship Award A.S.M.T. Ms. Winstead was an author of "The Re Agent Grade Water - How, Why, When" in 1968, and five volumes titled "The Descendants of Samuel Winstead."

 

Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 51900 Mayflower Road, with Rev. David Doane officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alpha Mu Tau fraternity of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists, formerly the American Society of Medical Technologists of which she was past president. Funds will go to scholarships for clinical laboratory scientist students, and will be administered through Alpha Mu Tau, the fraternity which honors leaders in laboratory science.
