SOUTH BEND - Charlie Mae Winkle, 96, of South Bend, IN,
passed away at 12:26 p.m., Wednesday, August 27, 2008, in Hospice
House. Charlie was born on November 1, 1911, in Madisonville, KY
to Charlie Madison and Sallie Ann (Dickerson) Nevitt.
She moved to South Bend in 1937 from Madisonville, KY, and lived
here until 1968. She then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, eventually
returning to South Bend, residing in the Karl King Tower. Charlie
was a self-employed beautician in her home for many years on
Sancome Avenue. On November 8, 1941, in South Bend, as Charlie
Mae Nevitt, she married Lee Foster. Then on December 19,
1968, she married Benjamin Winkle. Benjamin passed away in
October 31, 1969. Survivors include her daughter, Sally Ballatore
of South Bend, IN; her grandson, Brett Ballatore of Charlotte,
NC; her niece, Norma Wolfe of South Bend; her great-niece,
Wendy Wolfe and her husband Pat Dvorak of South Bend; her
great-nephew, Troy Wolfe of Muscatine, IA; and many nieces
and nephews who reside out of town. Preceding her in death were
her siblings, Hilan Nevitt, Effie Laughary, Otha Nevitt,
Ethel Heckaman, Author Nevitt, Era Davis, Lee
Nevitt, Naomi Meek and Flossie Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 30, 2008, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Charlie was a life member of the St. Joseph Valley Hairdressers and a member of the National Cosmetologists Association. She loved pampering her daughter's dog Dallas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Inc. or to the St. Joseph County Humane Society. The family wishes to thank Charlie's caregivers, Carol, Tonja, and Helena. They would also like to thank John Jacobs, M.D.; the staff at Memorial Hospital on the 10th and 11th floor; and the staff from the Leighton Heart and Vascular Center at Memorial Hospital.
