W.H. WILTFONG KILLED IN S.R.
Native LaPorte Man Victim; Rites Tomorrow
William H. Wiltfong, age 75, native LaPorte man, was instantly
killed Saturday night when struck by a truck in South Bend. Mr.
Wiltfong was hit at 8:30 pm at Madison and Eddy streets by a
truck driven by Fred Hertel, 41, of South Bend. Mr. Hertel told
South Bend police he had received the "go" signal from
a traffic light and had just started up when Mr. Wiltfong
suddenly walked across the street into the path of his truck, the
left front fender of which struck Mr. Wiltfong and knocked him
down. Hertel was released after Coroner A.L. Knapp questioned
him. Services Tomorrow; Funeral services for Mr. Wiltfong will be
held tomorrow afternoon. There will be a short service at 1
o'clock at the home of his son, Wilbert, 1921 East Miner street,
South Bend, followed at 2:30 with services at the Sauktown
Christian church in this county. Mr. Wiltfong is survived by six
children, Wilbert, Walter, Nelson, Mrs. Ed Spansail, Mrs. C.
Riedel and Mrs. Ed Starkweather, all of South Bend; two brothers,
Lewis of Mill Creek and Monroe of New Carlisle; 10 grandchildren
and one great-grandchild. His wife preceded him in death two and
a half years ago and a brother, George, died two years ago. Mr.
Wiltfong has several neices and nephews and many friends in and
around LaPorte. He was born and reared here. At the time of
his death he was making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ed
Spansail, 1021 East Madison street, South Bend.
