Dorothy May Widmar, 89, of South 23rd Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 11:09 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Southfield Village, South Bend. Mrs. Widmar retired from the Bendix Corporation and Widmar's Food Store in South Bend. She was born on May 2, 1912, in South Bend, to the late David and Anna Hutson, and was a lifelong area resident.
On April 22, 1939, in South Bend, she married William J. Widmar, who preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1996. Mrs. Widmar is survived by two daughters, Judy Malling of South Bend and Karen (Bill) Belledin of Henderson, Nev.; and by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Widmar was an active member of First Christian Church, South Bend, as Christian Women's Circle Leader, Past President Christian Women's Fellowship, also serving as advisor and service chairman; Past Elder and elected in 1997 as Elder Emeritus of First Christian. Mrs. Widmar was involved in many other activities including the Hearing and Speech Auxiliary, Reach to Recovery Volunteer with the American Cancer Society, a member of the Progressive Homemakers Club, Shriners Auxiliary, Orak Auxiliary, and the Shoes and Slipper Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today in the First Christian Church, 1101 E. Jefferson, South Bend. Rev. Bill Riggs and Rev. William J. Wassner will officiate. Burial will follow at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. The family received friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Palmer Funeral Homes, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend.
