SOUTH BEND - Frieda Mable Whisman, 94, residing at the
Sanctuary at St. Paul's, passed away at 7:54 p.m. Monday, July 7,
2008, in Hospice House. She had been a resident of St. Paul's for
the past eight years. She was born February 24, 1914, in
Mishawaka, IN, to Roy and Lela Mae (Hayden) Armstrong,
and had been a lifelong area resident.
On November 4, 1932, in Mishawaka, as Frieda
Armstrong, she was united in marriage to Porter E. Whisman. They
enjoyed more than 64 years of marriage until his passing on
September 8, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a
great-granddaughter, Nicole Sutterfield; three sisters,
Violet Austin, Harriet Long and Maxine Stipes;
and by a brother, Leroy Armstrong. Mrs. Whisman retired as a
seamstress from Tepe Furniture Store where she had worked for
several years. She was an avid volunteer at St. Paul's and had
many friends and acquaintances there. She also belonged to the
Red Hatters Club of St. Paul's. She is survived by three
daughters, Verna Dietrich of Valparaiso, IN, Janet Lein
of Garden City, MI, and Judith (Jeff) Zimmerman of
Schuylkill Haven, PA; two sons, Donald (Vera) Whisman of Bremen,
IN, and Roger Whisman of Decatur, IN. Also surviving are 16
grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 11
great-great-grandchildren; along with her brother, Dennis
Armstrong of Mishawaka, IN.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July
11th, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South
Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump will officiate.
Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park,
Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
today, and one hour prior to services on Friday in the funeral
home. The family suggests that contributions in memory of Mrs.
Whisman be made to The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care,
Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
