Harlan A. Wharton

Harlan A. Wharton, 87, of Regency Place, South Bend, Ind., formerly of Mishawaka, Ind., died at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, in Regency Place.

Mr. Wharton was born on Feb. 14, 1912, in Fulton County to William B. and Tina Wharton and lived his entire life in northern Indiana. After moving to South Bend, he married Doris S. Whitley, on May 23, 1938. She preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1980. They had three children, a son, Bob, who preceded them in death in July of 1980; two surviving daughters, Vivian Thursby of Cairo, Ga., and Marge Fallowfield of Elgin, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Wharton of Hobart, Ind.; eight granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Esther Lake of North Judson, Ind., Elsie Turner of Rochester, Ind., and Ruth Madsen of Winamac, Ind. After 19 years of faithful service to his country from the Defense Agency, he retired in 1980.

He remained active in the Mishawaka Pilots Club, presiding as president for several years. He was also a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association since 1981, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Mr. Wharton's son-in-law, Gordon Fallowfield officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts to the Mishawaka Pilots Club would be appreciated. The family is grateful for all the friends, the love, care, and concern for him during these last months.
