He was appointed to the department on

Before his last assignment at Company 8, he
also had been assigned to the aerial crew at Station 4 and also
served as captain of Company 10
During the Singer Manufacturing fire in
1960, Capt. Wentland received first degree burns on his arms,
face and back when trapped by flames on the second floor; he was
forced to hang by the eaves of the building
He was rescued when the late Mayor Edward T.
Voorde noticed his predicament and called for a ladder

Besides his widow, he is survived by his
mother, Mrs. Sylvania Wentland of South Bend, a son, Ronald, and
a daughter, Sandra, both at home
