SOUTH BEND - Joyce M. Welsh, 80, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Monday, June 9, 2008, in her home. She was born on March 27, 1928, in Mishawaka, IN, to Almont and Beulah (Shipley) Wertenberger, and was a lifelong resident.

On September 24, 1948, in South Bend, Indiana, she married Jack Welsh, who preceded her in death on April 1, 1998. Mrs. Welsh is survived by three daughters, Jeanne A. Welsh of Granger, Janet M. (Kenneth) Auker of Rock Island, IL, and Jackie L. Nuner of South Bend; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna Buckley of Mishawaka; and a brother, Morrie (Sue) Wertenberger of Grand Rapids, MI. Also surviving are four sisters-in-law, Melba (Stan) Garrow of Oxnard, CA, Betty Welsh of Simi Valley, CA, Jane (Dave) Welsh of Mishawaka and Virginia (John) Wells of Mishawaka. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by a daughter, Judith G. Stone. Mrs. Welsh was a charter member of Northway Church of Christ. She was an avid crafter, quilt maker and gardener. One of her attributes was as a baby whisperer. She could calm the most colicky baby. She loved to sing and loved music.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 13, 2008, in Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Ed Erskin, pastor of Northway Church of Christ, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 PM today in the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Joyce M. Welsh may be made to the American Diabetes Association, to the River Bend American Cancer Society, to Northway Church of Christ or to the Humane Society.
