MISHAWAKA - Rosa B. Weikel, 86, was the oldest daughter of
Charles E. and Mary Evelyn Weikel of Mishawaka. She was preceded
in death by her sisters, Ethel Marsh and Ruth Hunter;
and by a brother, Charles E. Weikel Jr. Rosa leaves seven nieces
and nephews, David L. Hunter of South Bend, Robert H. Hunter Jr.
of Mishawaka, Charles E. Weikel III of Roan, William Weikel of
Maple Grove, Minnesota, John Marsh of Houston, Texas, Nancy Levine
of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mary Barrett of
Charlotte. Aunt Rosie, as she was affectionately called, was a
world traveler. She traveled all over Europe, Asia and even the
Soviet Union. Rosa sometimes would include her nieces and nephews
in her travels.
What she will be most remembered for is her
dedication to art and to the children of Mishawaka High School,
where she was a school teacher and head of the Art Department for
many years. She recreated many of her paintings into living
stills that are a part of the Vesper service today. Many students
of Rosa's went on to become commercial artists. One of her
students was even published in a well-known art magazine and gave
her credit for becoming an artist. Rosa retired from Mishawaka
High School in 1980. Her art can be seen in many public buildings
in the Michiana area today including Mishawaka City Hall, Notre
Dame University and several churches, to name a few. After her
retirement, she spent countless hours painting the Michiana area,
and planting one of the most beautiful backyard gardens loaded
with her most favorite flowers and shrubs.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday,
July 8, 2007, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910
N. Main St. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at
10 a.m. Monday, with Rev. Sam Boys officiating. Burial will
follow at Fairview Cemetery.
