Rev. Charles F. Weiher CSC
Feb. 18, 1923 - on April 13, 2005
Rev. Charles F. Weiher, C.S.C., died suddenly at Holy Cross House Notre Dame on April 13, 2005. Fr. Weiher was born to Christian and Monica (Puetz) Weiher in Wapakoneta, OH on February 18, 1923. He attended St. Joseph Parish grade and high schools, graduating in 1941. He attended Notre Dame as a regular student, graduating in 1945 with a degree in physics.
He served a brief period in the Army and then went on to graduate classes at Notre Dame and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to Notre Dame and entering Holy Cross Seminary in 1946. He entered St. Joseph's Novitiate in August of that year and made first vows August 16, 1947.
After the Novitiate he returned to Moreau Seminary and Notre Dame for two years of philosophy and other requirements needed for graduate work in theology. From 1950-53, he studied theology at Holy Cross College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained in Sacred Heart Church on June 10, 1953.
Fr. Weiher spent the summer after ordination at St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores, MI. Then, with the exception of the year, 1961-62, at the University of Portland, he had been at Notre Dame studying, teaching philosophy, prefecting in residence halls and serving as hall rector. In 1960 he received a doctorate in philosophy from the University. With health an issue, Fr. Weiher moved to Holy Cross House in 1999.
Fr. Weiher generously shared his great gifts as gourmet chef and chief organizer of community vacation periods at Land O' Lakes, WI and Creevy House. His easy going manner and great wit has enlivened many an evening gathering at those two places as well as Corby Hall. He was a kind and caring college professor going to great lengths to assist those fortunate enough to have had him as a teacher.
Fr. Weiher is survived by a sister, Mary Ellen Nester of Wapakoneta, OH.; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Wake Service will be held for Fr. Weiher in the chapel of Moreau Seminary, Notre Dame, Indiana on Monday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame, on Tuesday, April 19, at 3:30 p.m.
Burial will follow in the Community Cemetery at Notre Dame.
The Kaniewski Funeral Home in South Bend, Indiana is in charge of arrangements.
