Philip Weber

Dec. 3, 1907 - March 6, 2006

 

Philip Weber, 98, was born on December 3, 1907, to Philip and Julianna Weber in Summerberry, Saskatchewan, Canada. In heaven, he joins his wife of 75 years, Zelpha, who died in 2001. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary, and brothers, John, Louis, Peter, Albert, Adam and Fred Weber, all of Canada.

 

His 117 descendants include his seven children, Phyllis (Owen) Barrett, Irma (Robert) Fox, Donald (Linda) Weber and John (Melanie) Weber of Mishawaka, Donna (Thomas) Freeze of Granger, Marilyn (Richard) Wilson of South Bend and Margaret Struss of Lakeville. Also surviving are 32 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Bill, Art Carl and Raymond Gerber of Canada. In addition “special children,” Dick and Virginia Taylor and children of Raleigh, N.C., Joanne Weber of Mishawaka and Ruth Easterling of Las Vegas.

 

Phil worked at Ball Band (Uniroyal) as a foreman die-maker for 43 years, retiring in 1970. He served on the Mishawaka Common Council from 1964-1972, serving as its first president following the city's incorporation. He loved sports, including softball, Cubs baseball, fishing and bowling. He was an avid golfer, walking 18 holes at Eberhart Golf Course until he was 89. He also loved woodworking, especially making bird houses for his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Andrew's United Church of Christ for 80 years, and had helped construct the church building on Fourth Street.

 

Visitation was held on Thursday, March 9, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services were held on Friday, March 10, in St. Andrew's Church, 320 E. Fourth St., Mishawaka. The Rev. Dale Speckman officiated.
