MISHAWAKA - James L. Watkins, 87, of Fountainview Nursing
Home, Mishawaka, passed away on Wednesday of natural causes. Jim
was born April 19, 1920, in Chattanooga, TN, to James and Mattie
(Ramsey) Watkins, who preceded him in death.
On August 15, 1943, he married Harriet
Garman, who survives, along with children, Richard (Christine)
Watkins of Edwardsburg, MI, Linda (Ken) Nellans of South
Bend and Paul (Cathy) Watkins of Williamsburg, IN. He is also
survived by a sister, Mary Ruth (Alex) Coffman of
Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren Michael (Madeline) Watkins of
Granger, IN, Amber Sherwood of Vero Beach, FL, Nathan and
Nancy Nellans of South Bend; and three
great-grandchildren.
On October 14, 1941, Jim enlisted in the
United States Army, serving in the European Theatre, where he was
awarded The Bronze Star for his heroic and meritorious
achievement. He was honorably discharged in 1945, as a First
Sergeant. In 1946, he was sworn into the International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 153 and was a member of
the first apprenticeship class. He served in various officers'
status under four Business Agents and eight Presidents. In 1953,
he was appointed press secretary by BA Sam Asire and served on
the Executive Board for 15 years. In 1980 he was honored with the
Distinguished Service Award from Local 153 and had been a member
for over 60 years. Jim and Harriet retired to Florida in 1984,
where he became a dedicated member of the Free Masons in 1987 and
in 1988 he was appointed Worshipful Master by Fort Pierce Lodge
87. He was also a member of the Shriners Scottish Rite and
lifetime member of VFW #360.
Visitation will be on Saturday, March 15
from 2 to 4 p.m., at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St.,
Mishawaka, where a Christian service will be held immediately
following the visitation at 4 p.m. Donations may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association.
