Louis
"Lefty" Walkowiak, 74, of North Wilber Street
in South Bend, Ind., died at 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec.
10, in his residence.
He
was born on Nov. 8, 1925, in South Bend, and was a
lifelong resident. He was preceded in death by his
parents, and by a son, Kirk L. Walkowiak in 1985. Mr.
Walkowiak retired on June 29, 1989, as a firefighter for
the South Bend Fire Department.
On
Sept. 3, 1955, he married Gloria M. Piechowiak in St.
Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend. She survives. He
is also survived by a sister, Darlene Hoover of South
Bend; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Micinski of Loves Park,
Ill.; a brother-in-law, Joseph (Jacqueline) Piechowiak of
South Bend; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mr.
Walkowiak was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church,
the Mishawaka Homing Pigeon Club, and Veteran of Foreign
War Post #8748. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War
II where he served on the USS Lyra.
A
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on
Monday, Dec. 13, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
Interment will follow in St. Joseph Polish Roman Catholic
Cemetery.
Friends
may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 12, in the
Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend,
where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m.
