Vincent E. Waldschmidt Sr., 79, of Garfield Court in South Bend, Ind., passed away as the result of a heart attack at 12:50 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center.

He was born on Sept. 15, 1923, to the late Vincent F. and Bertha E. (Scherer) Waldschmidt in Pekin, Ill., and had lived in South Bend for 50 years, coming from Bangor, Mich. Mr. Waldschmidt Sr. retired from the Bendix Corporation in 1988 after 36 years of service. He served in the Aircraft Division as an aircraft computer assembler.

On April 28, 1951, he married Virginia M. Saharski in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bangor. She survives along with a daughter, Rose Waldschmidt (husband Allen Childs) of South Bend; three sons, Richard Waldschmidt of South Bend, Vincent E. Waldschmidt Jr. of South Bend and Michael (wife Marjorie) Wald-schmidt of Franklin, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Chris, Jessica, Hannah, Naomi and Matthew Waldschmidt, all of Franklin, Eddie, Helen and Elise Waldschmidt, all of South Bend; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Susan Delia Bulat of Watervliet, Mich., Frances Piggott of Benton Harbor, Mich., and Rita Starbuck of Bangor.

Mr. Waldschmidt belonged to St. Patrick's Parish in South Bend for 50 years, where he served as an usher at the church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served from 1945 until 1946, and was a care-giver for his wife during the last 14 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, in St. Patrick's Church, with Rev. Leonard F. Chrobot officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 360 and American Legion Post 161. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Parish, 309 S. Taylor Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
