Lois Janet Alpert Wagner, 71, of Haddington Drive, South Bend, Ind., died on Thursday, June 24, in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wagner was born on Dec. 2, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Pearl and Edward Salzman. She moved to Akron at age 2, and had been a resident of South Bend since 1968. She received her B.S. in education from Ohio State University in 1949 where she majored in speech and hearing therapy. Mrs. Wagner taught in Columbus, Ohio, for several years, working with children with hearing disabilities.
In 1948 Lois married Morton Alpert who was employed by Miles Labs. He preceded her in death in 1977. In 1991 Lois married Morris Wagner who was retired from Notre Dame University where he had been a professor. Mr. Wagner also preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Wagner was a member of the Board of Directors at Sinai Synagogue for several years and was a member of the Sinai Sisterhood. She was also past president of Hadassah.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheri Alpert of Alexandra, Va.; her son, Stephen Alpert of South Bend; and by her brother, Albert (Jane) Salzman of Rocky River, Ohio. She is also survived by four stepchildren, Nana (Gary) Fromm of South Bend, Judy (Carl) Schultz of Granger, Ind., Bob (Susan) Wagner of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Joel (Lael) Wagner of Lakewood, Colo.; and by eight step-grandchildren, Carly and Kyle Schultz, Jason and Adam Fromm, Tony Clayes, and Elena, Alexandra and Sammy Wagner.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, June 25, in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Burial will follow in Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Mrs. Wagner to Sinai Synagogue or to Hadassah.
