SOUTH BEND - Merle P. Williamson Waechter, 86, of Hilltop Drive, died at 8:08 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Waechter retired from Bendix Corp. after 25 years of service. She was born Feb. 12, 1909, in LaPorte County, and lived in South Bend for 63 years.
On May 19, 1962, in South Bend, she married William F. Waechter. He died in 1987. She is survived by three stepsons, retired Lt. Col. Robert L. Williamson of Austin, Texas, William F. Waechter of Tempe, Ariz., and Paul E. Waechter of Los Alamitos, Calif.; 14 step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Happel of LaPorte. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Ladies of the Elks, Order of Easter Star Chapter 569 and was an American Red Cross volunteer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the church. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
