Charles R. Vergauwen, 66, of Decatur,
Mich., formerly of Jackson Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at
11:28 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Burgess-Lee Memorial
Hospital, Dowagiac, Mich. Charles was born in Mishawaka, Ind., on
Jan. 2, 1935, as the son of the late Julius and Helen (Audenaert)
Vergauwen.
On April 25, 1964, Charles married the
former Linda Burke in Roseland. Charles was preceded in
death on Aug. 1, 1999, by his loving wife, Linda. Charles is
survived by one daughter, Amy (Jon) Zook of Osceola, Ind.;
three sons, Richard (Susan) Vergauwen of Elkhart, Ind., Julius
Vergauwen of South Bend and Charles Vergauwen of Cape Coral,
Fla.; seven grandchildren; and by two sisters, Georgine Winther
of Sacramento, Fla., and Helene Slattery of San Fernando
Valley, Calif. Charles worked for the Brick Layers Union for 40
years until his retirement in 1997. Early in his career he was on
a small team of artisans who set the head of "Touchdown
Jesus" at the University of Notre Dame Library. He was a
U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8
p.m. Monday, Nov. 5th, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th
Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.
Tuesday in the Hahn Funeral Home. Rev. Berry England will
officiate. Entombment will follow at St. Joe Valley Memorial
Park.
