Tillie Varga

SOUTH BEND - The gentle grace of angels have softly touched the
life of Mrs. Tillie Varga. Tillie, 86, of South Bend,
passed away, May 22, in her residence. Tillie was born to Julia
and Teofil Zarembka in South Bend. Tillie attended St.
Hedwig's Grade School, South Bend Catholic High School, and
Indiana University South Bend. She received a Master's Degree in
Education and taught in the South Bend Community School
Corporation for nearly 20 years. Many memories of Edison
Elementary, Darden Elementary, and James Madison Elementary, she
kept close to her heart. Teaching was her passion! Tillie was a
life-long learner and continued her education, nearly earning her
doctorate. Tillie was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Parish and
a past member of Morris Park Country Club and South Bend Elk's
Lodge #235. She belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority during her
years in education. Tillie was an avid bridge player, and enjoyed
her membership in the Battell Duplicate Bridge Club.
Tillie is survived by her loving husband of
nearly 67 years, Edward Varga, and their three children: Their
son, Michael Varga (Linda) of Granger; and daughters, Julie Bankowski
(Jim) of South Bend, and Sharon Hughes of Taylor,
Michigan. Also cherishing her memory are six grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren: granddaughters, Karen Thornburg (Don)
of South Bend and Kristin Varga of Mishawaka; Along with her
grandsons, Christopher Bankowski of South Bend, Jason Varga of
Granger, David Wells (Rhonda) of Granger and Brian Wells
of Taylor, Michigan. Tillie also shared the joy of her three
great-grandchildren, Samantha, Matthew and Emily Grace. Her
grandchildren were truly blessed to have a grandmother like
Tillie. Tillie is also survived by a sister, Harriet Borkowski
of South Bend Along with her parents, preceding her in death were
two sisters, Alice and Phyllis.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Tuesday, May 27. In St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2120 E.
Jefferson Blvd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at
11 a.m. with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow
at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery on Western Avenue in South
Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for
Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Joe County or to the
Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana. A heartfelt thank you
to all the angels on earth who watched and cared for Tillie.
