Mary R. Van Winkle, 96, of Dewberry Avenue, Niles, Mich., died at 7:46 a.m. Thursday, May 17, in her residence.
She was born March 25, 1905, in South Bend, Ind., and was the daughter of Alex and Anna (Kocsis) Abraham. Mrs. Van Winkle retired from Deutron where she worked as a seamstress, and was the former owner and operator of Washington Variety Shop.
On Sept. 5, 1936, in South Bend, as Mary Abraham, she married Harold Van Winkle, who preceded her in death in February 1969. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Alex, Charles, Steve and Joseph; and by three sisters, Ann Barany, Agnes Gorog and Gazella Szalay.
She is survived by a son, Donald Van Winkle of Niles; four grandchildren, Julie (Dennis) Jackson of Niles, Don Van Winkle of Mishawaka, Ind., Lori Van Winkle and Tammy (Michael) Fry, both of South Bend; and by eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, Courtney, and Kayla Van Winkle, all of South Bend, Heather Jackson of Niles, and Loren McCloud, Landon Van Winkle and Troy Fisher, all of South Bend.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Stephen Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
