SOUTH BEND - August "Augie" VanParis, 82, of
South Bend, died at 11:27 P.M. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at home.
Augie was born October 10, 1925, in Mishawaka, to the late Albert
and Irma (DeMeyer) VanParis. Also preceding him in death
were one son, Larry in 1990, and a brother, Charles in 2005. On
October 6, 1951, in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, South
Bend, he married Dorothy "Dottie" Tschida, who
survives. Also surviving are one son, Tom (Cheryl) VanParis of
Indianapolis; one grandson, Darren A. VanParis; and one sister,
Clarice (Stanley) Hofmann of Scottsdale, AZ. Augie began
his work career at Studebaker's in April 1946 and continued there
until 1956. After his time at Studebaker's he was employed with
several dairies including Farmers, McDonalds, Allen, R.J. Nodd
and finally Jay's Potato Chips where he was a route salesman,
from which he retired in September 1989. He retired permanently
in 1993 after working part-time at Martin's Supermarkets on 23
where he was in charge of checking in the vendors.
When fully retired, he spent his free time
golfing with the "Golden Boys" at Erskine Golf Course.
He also enjoyed bowling during the winter months. He continued
both activities all throughout his treatments. Augie was very
interested in NASCAR, having attended many big races throughout
the country, as well as being a fan of Notre Dame football and
basketball. Augie was a former member of St. Mary of the
Assumption Catholic Church, was a current member of St. Jude
Catholic Church in South Bend, and a member of the Mishawaka
Alumni Association where he was instrumental in the planning of
the "Class of 1945" reunions, serving as co-chairman.
Attending breakfast with his classmates was always on his agenda.
He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and American Legion, Post
161. As a Boy Scout, he achieved the highest award, Eagle Scout,
from the Boy Scouts of America, and was inducted into the Order
of the Arrow.
Friends may call on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd, from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St., Mishawaka, where the Holy Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road in South Bend, with the Rev. John Delaney officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Indiana. Augie had a deep faith and his immediate and extended family were very important to him. He will be missed by all of us but never will he be forgotten.
