SOUTH BEND - Gertrude J. VanDeWalle, 85, of Holy Cross Care & Rehabilitation Center, Granger, formerly of Miner Street, died at 3:45 a.m. Tuesday in the center. Miss VanDeWalle was a bookkeeper and was an employee of the former Arthur Perley Insurance Co. She was born Sept. 22, 1908, in Mishawaka, and was a lifelong area resident. She is survived by a niece, Barbara A. Carlson of South Bend; and a nephew, Thomas R. Couvreur of Columbus, Ohio.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m. McGann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
