Lawrence Vanderhagen, 84, of Lincoln Way East, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 20, in St. Paul's Retirement Center, South Bend, Ind. Lawrence was born July 17, 1917, in South Bend, as the son of the late Frank and Marie (Demeyer) Vanderhagen. Lawrence was also preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Breit; and by one brother, Edward.
On Aug. 8, 1935, in Fulton, Ind., Lawrence married the former Ruth Bowers, who also preceded him in death in October 1996. He is survived by three sisters, Eleanor Vanderhagen, Evelyn Cates and Elaine Pyclik, all of South Bend; two brothers, William of Mishawaka and Frank of Rockledge, Fla.; and by several nieces and nephews.
Lawrence retired from the former Uniroyal Inc. in Mishawaka after 40 years where he was a supervising development engineer. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Humane Society of South Bend. He was on the board of directors of the Humane Society of St. Joseph County for three years. Lawrence was a member of the Uniroyal Management Club, the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph County, a member and volunteer of Friends of the Snite Museum of Art at Notre Dame. He was also active in Right to Life and the Dial-a-Care Program.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 21, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Rev. Robert Yast will be officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Lawrence may be made to the National Parkinson Association, 640 W. 168th Street, New York, NY 10032-9982.
